Inflation pressures are heating up again, and construction teams are feeling it. 📈 In his latest article published by NASBP, Eric Gaus, Chief Economist at Dodge Construction Network, breaks down what April’s inflation data means for the construction industry, including rising fuel, metals, and material costs that are putting pressure on project margins and fixed-price contracts. Key takeaways: ⚠️ Producer prices rose 1.4% in April ⛽ Energy-driven cost escalation is impacting transportation, equipment, and asphalt 🏗️ Input costs to construction producers are outpacing final construction costs 📉 Contractors operating under fixed-price contracts face growing margin compression risks As Eric explains, this isn’t just a short-term fluctuation — it’s a signal the industry should be watching closely. Construction starts surged 9% in April, with broad-based growth across nearly every major sector. A closer look at the data: ⚡ Nonresidential building jumped 18.6%, driven by data centers, offices, and widespread commercial gains 🏗️ Nonbuilding starts rose 7%, supported by strong activity in highways, bridges, and environmental public works 🏘️ Residential starts slipped just 0.7%, as multifamily declines offset gains in single-family construction April’s strength was notably broad-based, with momentum extending well beyond a handful of megaprojects. Large data centers and energy generation projects continued to fuel activity, but growth across most categories signals stronger underlying construction demand heading into the summer. 👉 Access the full April Construction Starts by Eric Gaus for detailed sector and regional insights: https://lnkd.in/g7USDwR4
