Decisions are not going away. In fact, their use as a fundamental automation component (essential for enterprises) is accelerating. This includes both the tech itself and the practices we need for lasting impact. DMN isn't just a standard, it's a way of looking at the world and then deconstructing it into its necessary parts. Like Design Thinking, practitioners need a way to go from the big picture (the model) to its parts. Even if you don't plan to execute DMN directly for your automation, the practices provide a significant lift. This is how teams can get to exceptional automation outcomes rapidly and mitigate the risk of missing requirements. I am very proud of our time together on the #DMN On-Ramp committee (DecisionAutomation.org). I have seen the value in real-world projects and I never want to go back to the old world. Thank you for the post Jan Purchase and special mention for James Taylor, Ryan Trollip and Marc Lerman for the final long haul together!

As chairman of the #DAO #DMN On-Ramp committee, I’m proud to announce the launch of our new website https://lnkd.in/ewqYXkVa dedicated to publicising the business value and best practices of business decision automation using DMN. The DMN On-Ramp is a federation of companies, practitioners and researchers dedicated to improving businesses through decision automation. You can learn more about the goals and business value of DMN, and see it in action at https://lnkd.in/e3WDGUDC. To be effective, every business needs to consistently make the right decisions. To achieve this at scale, decisions must be explicitly managed and automated to ensure optimal impact on revenue, risk and efficiency. The #DMN open, industry standard represents business decisions in a clear and non-technical format that can be executed. This allows decisions to be explicitly captured, understood, communicated, analysed, automated and rapidly evolved collaboratively within a business. Such decisions become valuable business assets. DMN improves the transparency, agility and robustness of automated decisions and allows them to safely harness generative AI and machine learning components within defined business guardrails. The standard is the most potent vehicle for documenting, communicating and automating decision logic to maximize agility, transparency and safe utilisation of AI. Any business with quickly evolving, non-trivial and repeatable business logic should evaluate its use and become a member of the DAO today.

Over the last couple of years, I've been part of DecisionAutomation.org - an independent, multi-vendor organization dedicated to best practices in decision automation. As you would expect, a key focus of this organization has been decision modeling with the Decision Model and Notation standard. In particular, we have been focusing on how to help organizations focus their adoption of DMN to maximize the value they get. After all, there are multiple ways to use DMN: Each requires different pieces of the standard as well as different kinds of software support and you need a way to identify what will work for you. To help with this, we talked to a lot of experts to break down the elements of the standard and classify tool capabilities. These covered decision requirements diagrams, model support, decision logic and KPIs, interpretability, implementation and terminology management. This resulted in a great tool we call the Interactive Usage Scenario tool. This lets you identify what you are trying to achieve and see which elements of DMN and which software features in a DMN tool will help you be successful. https://lnkd.in/gG8csquH The basic functionality has you pick one a business path such as transformation through technology, people development or focusing on a specific target use case - and then pick one of the core scenarios for decision modeling - anything from a simple decision inventory to detailed decision definitions to deployable decision services. The combination of business path and scenario will show you how important different DMN and tool capabilities will be - what's needed, what's helpful and what's optional. • DMN (the Decision Model and Notation) is a global, open (that is to say, public, not owned by any vendor) standard for decision modeling. It is controlled and published by the Object Management Group (OMG), one of the most highly regarded standards bodies in the world. DMN is not the only way to represent a decision but it is the only global standard for decision modeling. Learn more about DAO: https://lnkd.in/dK9pJ7St

  • Your business depends on making effective operational decisions many times every day. From assessing the likelihood of fraud in an insurance claim, to approving a loan or determining a commission payment. These decisions have a direct consequence on the revenue and reputation of your business. So, they need to be automated reliably, efficiently and accountably, using AI were appropriate. The quality of your company’s decision automation will increasingly determine its future performance. DecisionAutomation.org seeks to educate, advise and connect all decision automation stakeholders. We are calling on all adopters, vendors, and researchers of decision automation to join our community. By coming together, your expertise and achievements will not only be more widely recognized but will help shape the future of decision automation. This invitation includes everyone from beginners to seasoned practitioners, from CEOs to system architects.
