Hawaiian Language Month: How ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi Lives On ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi is alive today because of the dedication of communities who chose to protect it, teach it, and speak it, especially when doing so was not easy. Across Hawaiʻi, language revitalization continues through immersion education, cultural programs, and families raising keiki (children) in Hawaiian. Just as importantly, many adults are also reclaiming the language, proof that learning can happen at any stage of life. For those who want to learn more, Ulukau: The Hawaiian Electronic Library, is a valuable resource with Hawaiian-language dictionaries, newspapers, books, and cultural materials that help preserve and share ʻike (knowledge). This month, we honor the people behind the movement and the belief that language is not only preserved but also practiced. #HawaiianLanguageMonth #OleloHawaii #LanguageRevitalization #NativeHawaiian #DAWSONohana

Hawaiian Language Month: Why ʻOkina and Kahakō Matter In ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, details matter, especially the ʻokina (ʻ) and kahakō (¯). These aren’t decorative marks. They’re part of the Hawaiian alphabet and help guide pronunciation and meaning. 🔹 The ʻokina represents a brief pause or “glottal stop,” a sound that can change a word entirely. 🔹 The kahakō is a macron placed over a vowel to indicate that the vowel is held longer, which can also affect meaning. Using ʻokina and kahakō correctly is one way to honor the language with respect and care, whether you’re writing a place name, a person’s name, or a cultural term. This month, we celebrate the beauty and precision of ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi and the generations who continue to strengthen and sustain it. #HawaiianLanguageMonth #OleloHawaii #Okina #Kahako #DAWSONohana #NativeHawaiian

While coming together this past December, HNC and DAWSON leaders had the privilege of supporting long-time community partner Paepae o He‘eia, helping restore the 800-year-old He‘eia Fishpond—a powerful example of mālama ‘āina in action. From hands-on service to supporting the Kū Hou Kuapā restoration efforts, this experience was a reminder that leadership means showing up with humility, purpose, and heart, and living our shared kuleana. Hawaiian Language Month: Place Names Carry Knowledge In Hawaiʻi, place names are more than labels—they’re stories. Many Hawaiian place names describe the land itself: its features, weather patterns, and natural resources. For example: Hilo — “to twist” (associated with twisting currents/winds) Honolulu — often translated as “sheltered bay” or “calm harbor” Waikīkī — “spouting water” (linked to springs/streams) Lāhainā — “cruel sun” (as in sun-baked and dry) Maunakea — “white mountain” (snow-capped) Kīlauea — “spewing” or “much spreading” (tied to volcanic activity) When we learn and use these names with care, we honor the ʻike (knowledge) held within them, and the generations who named them with intention. This month, we celebrate ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi not only as a language, but as a living map of Hawaiʻi’s identity. #HawaiianLanguageMonth #OleloHawaii #DAWSONohana #NativeHawaiian

Hawaiian Language Month: The Story of ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi Hawaiian language, ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, is one of the most powerful living connections to Hawaiʻi’s history, identity, and culture. For generations, ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi was the primary language of governance, education, and daily life across the islands. Despite historic efforts to suppress it, the language endured through families, communities, and cultural practitioners who carried it forward. Today, Hawaiian language revitalization continues to grow through education, media, and everyday use, ensuring the language lives on for future generations. As a Native Hawaiian Organization, we’re proud to honor this month and the resilience behind every word spoken. #HawaiianLanguageMonth #OleloHawaii #NativeHawaiian #LanguageRevitalization #DAWSONohana
