  • “There’s $60 trillion of real estate at high risk from disasters, the U.S. spends a trillion dollars a year mitigating and recovering from disasters, we need a new approach to this,” Clerico told TechCrunch. “The silver lining is that it’s gotten so bad that the private markets can now take over — utilities going bankrupt, insurers leaving big markets, these are very large economic events, and those create markets for new solutions and products.” - Bill Clerico in TechCrunch https://lnkd.in/gZqTbXkc

  • We're announcing Convective Fund II — $85 million to back founders building a more resilient world!

The world is getting warmer and our infrastructure is getting older. The convergence of these trends has fueled a historic increase in volatility and disasters. America now suffers a billion dollar disaster once every 18 days, a startling frequency that has tripled since the 1980s. These disasters come with heartbreaking human and environmental costs, but also a staggering price tag: over $1 trillion per year. The cost is comparable to our spending on defense or interest on the national debt. We think founders are a part of the solution, and we’re excited to continue our part at Convective Capital and announce Fund II: $85M for disaster resilience. Thanks to everyone who has been a part of our work so far. More here on our Substack: https://lnkd.in/dgiKjm_B

Paul Graham and Jessica Livingston founded Y Combinator, the most successful startup factory in history. YC is to tech what Hitsville USA was to Motown. In this inaugural podcast, my partners Kat Mañalac and Bill Clerico sit down with PG and Jessica to for a wide ranging discussion spanning disaster prepping, the cockroach qualities of founders, why hard-tech is in, and what it's like to live on "an island full of reasonable people."

Episode 01 of the Disasterproof podcast is live. Bill Clerico and Kat Mañalac sat down with Paul Graham and Jessica Livingston — co-founders of Y Combinator — to talk about what it takes to build things that survive. One line from Paul captures the episode well: "There's always some kind of disaster going on. It's almost a rule of thumb at Y Combinator — just like in a hospital, there's always somebody who's coding." The founders who thrive aren't the ones who avoided turbulence. They're the ones who got stronger because of it. In this episode: how to be a "cockroach" like Airbnb, what AI and climate change have in common, what YC did during the 2008 financial crisis, why the energy and climate space may be at the same inflection point fintech was 15 years ago, and more. Listen here: https://lnkd.in/gs7bW_7G Thanks to our partners at Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation for supporting the conversations and ideas behind this show!

TIME has named Overstory one of the TIME100 Most Influential Companies of 2026, and one of the Top 10 in Sustainability for our work helping utilities prevent power outages and wildfires. This recognition is a testament to the critical moment we’re facing and the important work Overstory is leading. The grid was never built for the storms and wildfires that utilities now face every year. But for the first time, remote sensing makes it possible to direct finite resources exactly where they will prevent outages and wildfires before they start. Today, the largest utilities in North America are trusting Overstory to help them make these decisions. I’m so proud of the talented, mission-driven Overstory team, and grateful for our fantastic community that pushes us further at every step along the way. Thank you, TIME, for recognizing the impact of our work. https://lnkd.in/eq8NtrqG

California has flirted with complete market failure in homeowners insurance. Wildfire risk is rising far faster than premiums are allowed to. The average homeowner in CA pays about 35% less than one in TX. Since 2021, many insurers have exited the market entirely while the state's insurer of last resort, FAIR Plan, has tripled. It carries $750 billion of exposure. So if you can't raise prices, and you don't want to exit, can you reduce the risk itself? This partnership between BurnBot and Mercury Insurance is a huge step in that direction. They're creating a feedback loop between proactive mitigation and insurability.

Big news from BurnBot! We’re proud to announce a strategic investment and alliance partnership with Mercury Insurance. This marks Mercury’s first strategic investment in a private company - and a major signal that the future of wildfire resilience and insurance availability will be built through proactive mitigation. Together, BurnBot and Mercury will work to connect real-world wildfire risk reduction with insurance outcomes - combining fuels treatment, defensible space, and risk intelligence to help communities become safer, stronger, and more insurable over time. California’s insurance crisis requires new thinking. This partnership is about building a model where verified mitigation can help improve resilience, protect communities, and expand pathways to coverage. This is an exciting milestone for BurnBot, and an important step toward scaling practical wildfire solutions where they’re needed most. • Keeping homes insurable in California means connecting the work of preventing wildfires to how insurance actually gets priced and offered. Excited to see Mercury Insurance and BurnBot partnering to make that real.

Volatility is rising — and Seneca founder Stuart Landesberg is thinking about what that means for the next generation. His work isn't just about rapid response or augmenting fire agencies. It's about whether technology can help restore trust and peace of mind in a world that feels increasingly uncertain. Check out our newest episode to hear why Landesberg still believes we can build a future worth being optimistic about: https://lnkd.in/gYvXG9eB Bill Clerico Kat Mañalac Convective Capital Red Sky Summit

Quick suppression of new wildfires during extreme fire weather is critical in reducing losses, particularly in the Wildland Urban Interface, where neighborhoods back right up against wildland. Yet during peak fire season, it's increasingly common for initial attack resources to be spread too thin to respond to every new fire as quickly as is needed to prevent catastrophic spread. Seneca's autonomous, rapid response fire suppression drones were made for precisely this situation.
