In 2023, Common App launched its Next Chapter—a bold commitment to expanding college access for all students, and an ambitious goal of closing our equity gap for students from low- and middle-income communities. 📈 This year’s Next Chapter impact report shows real progress: ✅ 31% of applicants came from low- and middle-income communities (up from 29% in 2021-22) ✅ 422K+ students from these communities applied through Common App this year ✅ More first-gen and transfer students are using Common App than ever before. But there’s more work to do. By expanding direct admissions, scholarship opportunities, and creating community college pathways, we’re making the college journey more simple, logical, and joyful. ICYMI: Last week we released a research brief including fascinating data surrounding student persistence in STEMM fields. Check it out here 👇 📊
New research from Common App examines persistence in STEMM and the barriers that prevent students—particularly Black, Latinx, and first-generation students—from earning degrees in these fields. 🔬 Over half of college applicants aspire to STEMM fields, but major demographic gaps emerge in degree completion. 🎓 The biggest challenge isn’t switching majors—it’s not finishing college at all. More than half of first-gen and Black STEMM aspirants don’t earn any degree within six years. ⚙️ These findings highlight the need for policies and programs that help students translate their aspirations into degrees and careers.
