A CFO who approved an AI budget last quarter usually hears the same thing from the data team six weeks in: The data underneath isn't ready. You can't get good AI output from disorganized data. It'll give the leadership team an answer that looks clean but isn't. The data work is the part of the project nobody wanted to do first. It's usually what decides whether the AI works at all. I keep seeing teams discover this in month three of a build, not month one of the planning.

Three months into a data analyst hire, you can usually tell which one you got. The kind who takes the ball and runs, or the kind that needs hand-holding. The interview rarely tells you which is which. The "perfect" answer about a past project doesn't show whether someone goes after the business problem on their own, or waits to be handed a spec. Two questions get me closer to it: -Tell me about a time you dug into a problem nobody asked you to look at. -How would you approach a data set you've never seen before? The first shows you whether they're self-directed. The second shows you whether they go to the business question or jump to the technical answer.

How do you know who is going to resist your ERP implementation before it starts? Jim Leone watches the kickoff meeting. Not just what people say. How they say it. Body language. Tone of their questions. Whether they go quiet when the executives are in the room and start raising concerns the moment they leave. Every project has resistors. Jim’s approach: identify them early, understand their concerns, tell them what’s in it for them. And if none of that works, make a decision about whether they belong on the project. An organization wants employees to exercise a higher level of critical thinking, using facts to drive the questioning and analysis to solve problems. Human nature often leads people to go directly to the blame game, driven by emotions. That process diverts from the real issue at hand. Criticism thinking directs the spotlight onto a person and blames them. Rather than criticism thinking, it is better to focus on critical thinking by looking holistically for root causes and using the solution to drive better performance. Focusing on problems holistically has created a much healthier, productive environment for the Church Pension Group. #RootCauses #CriticalThinking Listen and/or read show notes here: https://lnkd.in/eJqmMf6S

You pulled your best people off their day jobs to run the implementation. Who is doing their jobs? This is one of the most common mistakes Jim Leone sees on ERP projects. Companies ask their subject matter experts to run the implementation AND keep the business running at the same time. It doesn’t work. They fall short on requirements. They fall short on testing. They fall short in every phase that matters. The answer is backfilling. Bring in outside contractors to cover the day to day so your best people can be 100 percent dedicated to the project. It costs money. Less than a failed implementation. Listen here: https://lnkd.in/eUa-u6Q7

Curt’s youngest son, Trevor, has special needs. The family has been involved with an organization in Georgia called Families of Children Under Stress (FOCUS). FOCUS helps thousands of families through challenging situations, and Curt has worked with them to help run a golf tournament and raise funds. To have community support, Curt told the organization that he was planning on doing the six-month hike. That’s when he came up with the idea of Trekking for Trevor. The trek would become a fundraiser for the organization that has meant so much to Curt’s family. #CommunitySupport #TrekkingForTrevor Listen and/or read show notes here: https://lnkd.in/e_q3-wiE
