Training and operating modern AI systems requires enormous computing power, and that computing power consumes vast amounts of energy. Why we wrote this story: At our recent event in Ft. Lauderdale, we were lucky enough to have Joseph Boccuzzi from NVIDIA with us. Joe explained why this NVIDIA Nokia tie up relates to the future of communications and AI with an important concept of "NVIDIA Inside" moving forward. NVIDIA, Nokia and T-Mobile Bet on AI-RAN as the Foundation for 6G In October 2025, NVIDIA made one of its most consequential moves yet into the telecommunications sector, announcing a strategic partnership with Nokia and naming T-Mobile US as the primary carrier partner to pilot the resulting architecture. At the center of the collaboration is AI-RAN, or Artificial Intelligence Radio Access Network, a shift designed to transform traditional cellular infrastructure into what the companies describe as edge AI data centers. The most eye-catching element of the announcement was financial. NVIDIA committed a $1 billion equity investment in Nokia, securing roughly a three percent stake. This was not a routine vendor relationship. It signaled long-term alignment around AI-native 5G-Advanced and future 6G infrastructure. Rather than treating telecom as a peripheral vertical, NVIDIA is positioning itself as a foundational player in how next-generation networks are built and operated. Technically, the partnership revolves around integrating NVIDIA’s Aerial RAN Computer, known as ARC-Pro, directly into Nokia’s base station hardware. Unlike traditional RAN systems that rely on highly specialized ASICs, ARC-Pro leverages GPU-based computing. That architectural shift is significant. GPUs excel at parallel processing, which makes them well suited for AI workloads such as real-time optimization, predictive modeling and computer vision. Embedding GPU capability at the base station level opens the possibility that cell towers will no longer function solely as signal transmitters, but as distributed compute nodes....
