Simplifying Building Codes.

About us

Jerry Tyrrell’s brainchild, Tools™ was born after decades of experience in the construction and property industries. Tools™ aim is to make building compliance easier to access and simple to understand and interpret. The old saying “A picture is worth a thousand words” is the cornerstone that Tools™ is built upon. We humans are ‘hard wired’ to prefer a picture where we know exactly what we are looking at – as opposed to 23,000+ pages of black and white building codes. • Need to know the regulation for balustrade heights? • The rules & regulations for pool fences? • Best practice for replacing a subsill? Simply zoom into our Tools™ showing a stair rail, a diagram of a pool fence or threshold and find your answer in seconds. Tools™ are backed by decades of experience of interpreting compliance and identifying risks. Ensuring you complete any job, not only to the correct rules and regulations – but to best practice as well!

❌ Why do we Insure for FAILURE? ❌ I wrote this 20 years ago … and nothing has changed except we have probably wasted / lost over $1tn in mistakes, rework, waste, profit, stress & shame. ✅ Building Well is it’s own reward! Pride & skill need no ITPs, Insurance or excuses ✅ chrome://external-file/CPD%20Insurance.pdf

Why has it not yet arrived? And what of all the talk regarding a ‘pause’? “ Check out his article https://lnkd.in/gWT9xGAr

🎓 BuildingTools Weekly Quality & Best Practice CRAFT Tips ✅ …. mini Tool™SHED? DOORS For some reason I’m constantly saying the same thing to Designers & Carpenters “Why don’t you know this basic CRAFTspersonship”: ⚠️ Avoid timber external doors unless there is a 900mm awning / no MDF or particle board core / primed top & bottom / never dark colour if sun exposed / NEVER hose these doors ⚠️ Everything in the diagram MUST be done …. 12 REPEAT 12 arrissed edges mean paint sticks better / edges aren’t sharp / easily damaged ⚠️ Designers - please select doors without a block core if you specify high gloss finish ⚠️ Split hinges / brushed uncoated 316 stainless, bronze, brass choices stand the test of time ⚠️ NEVER use metal jambs next to pools / in beachfront properties … ppssstt why not push for stainless steel jambs industry wide from now on esp. for wet areas / exit doors? https://lnkd.in/gHbFQdHU

BuildingTools has a simple mission to eliminate defects by 2030. The way to do this is for the industry to see it differently. Yes, we are technically “reading” the image and associated text but with over 60% of the nation as Visual Learners we need to redirect our thoughts to “seeing” it. What are your thoughts?

Construction defects cost Australia an estimated $20 billion per year, and possibly up to $50 billion when broader economic and social impacts are included. Eliminating these defects could be transformative: 1. The scale of savings is GDP-changing in both dollar and productivity terms. 2. It could effectively fund 100,000 additional social and affordable housing units every year at no net cost to the public purse. 3. It would lower the cost of new homes at handover and throughout ownership, easing the path for first home buyers. Tools, created by Jerry Tyrrell, a recognised global leader in construction defect prevention, delivers the requirements of the NCC and other codes in a clear, largely graphical format for every stakeholder in the building process. Importantly, Tools cuts through thousands of pages of complex regulation in the NCC. By translating red tape into simple, practical guidance, it removes a major compliance burden from builders, trades, certifiers, and regulators alike. Tools makes it as easy to build right as it is to build wrong. Its mission is simple: “No defects in construction by 2030 for those using Tools in their day-to-day work.” The federal government has recognised its value, awarding Tools an R&D grant. With 30,000+ and growing users, backed by more than 100 person-years and $10+ million of private investment, Tools is proving that compliance and quality can go hand in hand. But industry uptake needs to accelerate. Too many builders and tradespeople unintentionally “build badly” simply because they lack easy access to practical, accurate, and understandable information on how to do it right. If the government is serious about lifting productivity, reducing construction defects, and cutting regulatory red tape, Tools represents one of the easiest, fastest, and most significant opportunities conservatively capable of lifting national productivity by 1%+ per annum. Want to know more? Explore the Tools story and see how we can build better, together.
