When Kim Donovan moved into Bellwether Housing, she was skeptical. She had heard the stigma around affordable housing, but she needed to maintain her independence while managing MS. What she found was something she hadn’t expected: community, dignity, and a place to call home. Now, 20 years later, Kim lives in an ADA-accessible unit, walks her dog Gibbs through the neighborhood she loves, and leads a local MS support group. Bellwether Housing is deeply saddened by the loss of Democratic Rep. Frank Chopp—a fearless architect of change who reshaped housing across Washington State. Frank devoted his life to the conviction that every person deserves dignity, stability, and hope. Under his leadership access to affordable housing expanded statewide, opportunities for homeownership grew in historically marginalized communities, and crucial support was secured for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Frank's unwavering dedication to justice and equity transformed lives and communities, and his impact will endure for generations.

Seattle Public Schools has seen a sizeable spike in the number of students experiencing homelessness for the second year in a row. In such an expensive city, families are continuing to be hit hard by inflation and often struggle to find and secure affordable housing.

Homelessness has been rising since 2017, driven by a massive shortage of affordable housing that's pushed prices up. Research finds that where rents go up, so does homelessness. That rise stalled during the pandemic when sweeping federal aid helped keep people housed. But since that help ended, people still face higher prices for housing, food, and other everyday goods.
