This year BBT Architects was awarded the Energy Trust of Oregon's Net Zero Emerging Leaders Internship Grant. The grant supports architecture and engineering firms to hire an intern in support of their net zero commitments. Our intern—Devon Lizza—will be presenting her work on embodied carbon analysis at the Carbon Leadership Forum Portland Hub Happy Hour tomorrow evening. Last week, members of the BBT team traded desks for tool belts in support of Women Build Week by Bend-Redmond Habitat for Humanity. Ellen, Sherry, and Genevra spent the day at Habitat’s Timber Cottages community in Redmond, helping hang doors alongside an incredible group of volunteers, builders, and community partners. At BBT, we believe design is ultimately about people and community, so it was especially rewarding to spend the day contributing in a hands-on way to a project that will create safe, stable housing for local families. Huge thanks to Habitat for Humanity Bend/Redmond for the work they do, and to everyone who showed up ready to build, learn, collaborate, and make a difference. Last week, the BBT team had the opportunity to participate in the Rubbish Renewed Eco Fashion Show, a creative fundraiser celebrating sustainability, reuse, and community. Our entry, Material Morphosis, transformed reclaimed upholstery fabric, drapery sheers, wallcovering, and archived material samples from our library into a runway-ready design, created and modeled by Sherry Jako. We were also thrilled to cheer on BBT intern Devon Lizza, whose imaginative and beautifully crafted piece was another highlight of the evening. As architects and designers, we think a lot about materials, lifecycle, and the creative potential of what already exists. Events like Rubbish Renewed are a fun and inspiring reminder that sustainability and creativity often go hand in hand. Thank you to everyone at Rubbish Renewed, the organizers, volunteers, designers, artists, and fellow participants who made the evening such a success. We loved being part of an event that supports a great cause while bringing so much imagination and energy to the community. Design is a conversation.
