When conducting our tests, we always used the most current version of all products. The products were allowed to update themselves at any time and query their in-the-cloud services. Can a European social network combine digital sovereignty with privacy by design? In a new #dotmagazine article, Eric Clausing, Lead IoT at AV-TEST, examines the Android app of @W Social – a Swedish social media platform positioning itself as an alternative to X, with a focus on privacy, transparency and European data protection standards. The AV-TEST analysis finds several positive indicators: only one third-party tracker component was identified, no Google AdServices or Android Advertising ID permissions were requested, and the privacy policy scored 82 out of 100 points in AV-TEST’s automated AI-based assessment. But there are also points requiring attention. The app begins communicating and transmitting data before users have the opportunity to read and accept its privacy policy. The analysis also detected requests to non-EU servers and static references to US-based servers.
