Helping Our World Work Better

About us

Over 13,000 ASTM standards operate globally. Defined and set by us, they improve the lives of millions every day. Combined with our innovative business services, they enhance performance and help everyone have confidence in the things they buy and use – from the toy in a child’s hand to the aircraft overhead. Working across borders, disciplines, and industries we harness the expertise of over 30,000 members to create consensus and improve performance in manufacturing and materials, products and processes, systems and services. Understanding commercial needs and consumer priorities, we touch every part of everyday life: helping our world work better. For almost 125 years, ASTM has been well known as one of the world’s largest and most established standards creating organizations. Today, ASTM also offers a wide range of products and services that go well beyond standards: training, proficiency testing, certification and the new portal service Compass. These offerings significantly enhance the benefits ASTM provides to its stakeholders worldwide.

  • ASTM President Andy Kireta had the privilege to moderate a “Building Bridges for Safe Transatlantic Trade” standards roundtable discussion at the U.S. Mission to the EU in Brussels yesterday. Leaders from the European Commission, standardization organizations, industry, and transatlantic partners exchanged perspectives on the future of EU standardization policy, common challenges, and potential pathways for greater collaboration. ASTM Director of European Affairs Sara Gobbi shared examples of how global standards from ASTM provide the foundation for trust, trade and transformation across many European industries. While there are many takeaways, the conversation highlighted how shared principles—transparency, openness, and consensus—are essential to ensuring that global standards drive innovation, enhance safety, and strengthen global interoperability by building bridges in the global standards landscape. ASTM International wishes to thank the U.S. Mission to the European Union for their leadership in convening the roundtable and all partners who attended and contributed to such a thoughtful and forward-looking dialogue - especially cosponsors NSF and UL Standards & Engagement, and our friends Sergio Vazquez Jimenez, Andrew Hately, and Peter Chase.

  • Greg Simmons, CEO of Insol Ltd, will be a key-note speaker at the Performance-Based Façade Design (PBFD) Seminar on Durable Façades to be held September 16th to 28th in Venice, Italy. See more detals in this shared post...

𝗩𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗲 | 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁. 𝟭𝟲–𝟭𝟴, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: https://lnkd.in/dSXrgV8D I am very happy to announce that Greg Simmons, CEO at Insol Ltd, will join Performance-Based Façade Design (PBFD) as a speaker at the 2026 Seminar on 𝘿𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙁𝙖𝙘̧𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙨. His presentation, 𝘽𝙚𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙘 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙩𝙝: 𝘼𝙘𝙘𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙎𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙏𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝘿𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙋𝙤𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝙁𝙖𝙘̧𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙨, will explore the limitations of conventional structural and weather-tightness testing methods when applied to porous architectural screens and open façade systems. Drawing on more than two decades of bespoke screen projects, Greg will discuss how full-scale wind testing has been used to identify aerodynamic, acoustic, and dynamic issues during design. The presentation will also introduce a 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹-𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗹’𝘀 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗟𝗮𝗯 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, extending façade testing into the long-term durability domain currently not addressed by existing standards — particularly for projects where in-service failure cannot be accepted. The official conference program is now live and 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 remains open until June 1 at a significantly discounted rate. In addition to the main conference program, PBFD 2026 includes curated off-site experiences across Venice and the Veneto region. I am also very grateful for Insol Ltd's support as a Silver Sponsor. • ASTM International presented its Katharine E. Morgan Women in Leadership Award to Helene Pierce for her contributions to ASTM’s roofing and waterproofing committee (D08) and organizational governance. The award honors Katharine Morgan, ASTM International’s first woman president, and recognizes female leaders of ASTM committees who have made significant contributions to the development of standards. Hardy Pierce joined committee D08 in 1984, during a time when it had very few female members. She readily took on roles of greater impact and responsibility, helping to usher in a new era of participation. Hardy Pierce’s career spans over 40 years in the roofing industry and she has been active in many of the industry’s organizations. She most recently served as vice president of building science, regulatory, and industry support from 2000-2022 at GAF. In addition to ASTM, she is a Fellow of the International Institute of Building Envelope Consultants (IIBEC) and a member of the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA). • ASTM and Canadian Standards Association have signed an agreement to develop a joint standard on evaluating biomass supply chain risk. The collaboration builds on CSA Group’s existing CSA W209 standard, published as a National Standard of Canada, and aims to expand its use and impact. “This is an incredibly exciting opportunity to collaborate with CSA Group,” says Dan Smith, vice president, standards and membership, at ASTM International. “By building on CSA Group’s existing Canadian national standard and working with ASTM to extend its reach," says Ray W., vice president of standards development at CSA Group, "this collaboration will help scale consistent, credible risk assessment practices internationally."
