One of the amazing things about working in low level infrastructure software in as part of the The Apache Software Foundation is working with great systems programmers and engineers around the world. When all software development was done in person, there were only a few places in the world that specialized on this type of software and if you weren't physically there, you likely couldn't contribute meaningfully. A good recent example of a meaningful contribution is a collaboration between Qiwei Huang and myself to improve Late Materialization (LM) in the Rust Apache Arrow Parquet reader to accelerate filtering. This is a somewhat niche topic, typically locked away inside proprietary engines and the heads of a few Database PhDs, so we also wrote a blog to try and demystify the process https://lnkd.in/euGgAQpS
