Ok, I’m really not sure at all how these two things could be at odds. If you’re solving a need for an end user you should absolutely be meeting your innovation goals. Innovation exists to solve problems or provide a new ability.

I find this is a clear sign of innovations goals not being aligned to business objectives and hence customer needs. If caught in such a situation give priority to customer needs and review your innovation pipeline as getting in such situation is a clear sign of mis-alignment and resources not getting utilized in right direction. A solution to customer needs might seem to be short term but it’s ultimately satisfied customers who fund for your long term innovations …isn’t it 🥲

An innovation has to be a new idea that can be commercialized. If the customer does not see value in a new technology or an innovative idea, it's worthless. Priority has to be given to resolve a customer problem or to meet customer needs and expectations. Innovation is not a goal but means to achieve a customer goal and exceed expectations more effectively and efficiently.
