Underperformance is not a reflection of team members' abilities, but rather our failure to understand them, their strengths, or the situation. It's a call to re-examine our approach, ask more questions, and seek to understand the root causes of the issue. This perspective highlights the importance of empathy, effective communication, and situational awareness in leadership. By shifting the focus from blaming the team member to understanding the situation, we can: - Identify and address underlying issues - Provide targeted support and development opportunities - Foster a culture of psychological safety and open communication - Improve overall team performance and well-being

"Back to the basics" almost always helps. However in order to improve performance of a team member, one cannot allow things to drag along. The performance change curve has to to happen simultaneouly while the correction inputs are being implemented. In order to achieve that, a leader need to balance the workload of an underperforming team member and then start the process interventions. This has to happen in a timebound manner so that other team members do not stress out.
