When a client doubts their career path, listen to their concerns with empathy and understanding. Highlight their strengths and achievements to boost confidence. Provide honest, constructive feedback on areas to improve and suggest practical steps forward. Encourage them to explore opportunities aligned with their skills and passions.

Let's take a step back. There are two fundamental reasons why a client doubts their career path. (1) Growing in their role currently but don't see a growth path ahead (2) Not growing in the current role. It is important to understand their background well, followed by their aspirations and how they align with the market demand. Any feedback should be based on this alignment. Just telling someone that you have the potential to grow is a half baked feedback.

Know thyself. Start by making a list of your proudest accomplishments. Then dig. What did you achieve? How? What were the biggest obstacles? Why were you able to overcome them? Why are you proud of this? Your proudest achievements almost always happen at the intersection of your greatest strengths and your deepest passion. You might think it was the business challenge you overcame … only to discover that what you really loved about the work was the people … leading and inspiring a team to walk through fire together - and triumph. Next, do a few assessments to discover what your top talents and strongest attributes are. A few of my favorites are StrengthsFinder, 16 Personalities and Positive Intelligence. Third, name + face your fears.

If they are doubting their career, then there is a reason behind that. Go back to the basics on why they are in the role, what their personal goals are and if they align to why they are in the role in the first place and if it's a role for the long-term.

One of the main reasons for doubts many a times is a fear of failure or a lack of internal drive to achieve! Starting with identification of core values is a very 'bulb on' activity - both for the client and the coach! While working with core values, the client will start getting in touch with his internal drives. What has helped him in the past, what achievements he has enjoyed! Once he is able to recognise his self worth, his inclination for actions goes up! While working with clients, many a times they want to know how does my work tie up with my lifes purpose? Helping clients see a link to their lifes purpose, in the work that they do, acts like a big boost. Then they are able to sustain momentum for much longer durations.
