It may/may not be useful to transcribe high level detail information such as pauses, overlaps, non-verbal cues or background noise. It depends on the analytical objectives set forth by the research design. The goal is to have a document that is straightforward to analyze and clearly understood on the part of external scrutiny. I would also add that especially for first time qualitative researchers, it would be ideal to manually transcribe, rather than use transcription software or services. Transcription is the first step of the interpretative process, thus the researcher inevitably misses out when they skip it. Using assistance is ideal when there is a high volume of recordings to transcribe.

Methodology & Philosophical Paradigm: Your methodology is the framework or roadmap for the research process including how to go about the data collection and analysis process. It is helpful to return to your research questions throughout the process to ensure that your methods, strategies, and approaches are answering the research questions you set out to investigate. The purpose is to draw meaning from displayed data. E.g., comparison/contrast, noting patterns and themes, clustering, confirmatory tactics (multiple sources of data collective, negative cases, following up on surprises)

When validating qualitative data or speaking to the notion of "trustworthiness" it is vital to recognize that qualitative researchers are seeking transferability NOT GENERALIZABILITY: The burden of proof is not on the researcher, but rather on the person seeking to make an application elsewhere. Thus trustworthy research involves: 1. Authenticity 2. Sincerity & Transparency: Researcher Reflexivity 3. Paying attention to the study’s conceptualization (how data are collected, analyzed, and findings are presented grounded within philosophical paradigm, methodology, and theoretical framework) 4. Contextualization: enough so readers can determine the extent to which their situations match and how can findings be transferred

Focus group discussions provide rich insights into lived experiences of both rare and common phenomena. Based on my experience, a qualitative researcher should be immersed in the data collection stages. Meanings and depths of discourse can be lost at the interpretation and transcription stages. Hence, the need for data triangulation especially through the data validation process with respondents.

Last year I completed a study using IPA (interpretive phenomenological analysis) methodology. My intention this fall is to add value to the data and analysis, and the developing profession (emergency management), by running focus groups using PAR (participatory action research) methodology focused on the same topics from the previous study while involving the community.
