What challenges do artists face when using generative AI for artistic expression?

There are debates regarding the authenticity of art created by artificial intelligence. Given that these technologies frequently utilize preexisting artworks to acquire knowledge and generate novel compositions, there is a debate on whether the resulting output can be regarded as genuinely creative or as an authentic expression of an artist. Establishing the proprietorship of art created by artificial intelligence can be a complex endeavor. Copyright ownership disputes might arise regarding the rightful holder - whether it is the artist who contributed the input, the AI developers, or another party. This also encompasses apprehensions of AI systems potentially duplicating copyrighted works without authorization.

In the era of gen-AI, the enforcement of IP rights is becoming increasingly nebulous. This technology, which often uses artists' work as training data, lacks transparency. There's a pressing need for clarity on how this data is used and what constitutes fair compensation for artists. Current IP frameworks are ill-equipped to address these challenges, as they predate the AI revolution. Organizations like WIPO must be proactive in policy framing to protect creator rights. As AI advances, IP laws struggle to keep pace, creating a legal grey area. Ensuring artists' rights and fair compensation in this new landscape is crucial for the future of creative industries.

Generative Al, like any Al, can inadvertently perpetuate biases present in the training data. Artists need to critically evaluate their tools to avoid reinforcing stereotypes or causing harm.

Because generative AI is trained on data gathered from sources that are potentially subject to copyright protection, using generated artworks from AI can put the publisher in legal peril if there is a copyright claim from one of the creators that had their data scraped in order to produce the work. However, this is still and area of law that is developing and evolving due to its highly novel nature. It remains to be seen how cases like this will be resolved although a number have already been filed.

Dear AI community, I would like to share my thoughts on the matter. One of the key issues is the distortion and errors faced when drawing humans using generative AI. Another issue is the lack of clear ownership of intellectual property (IP) when using certain AI systems. I believe that as a community, it is important for us to continuously collaborate and communicate our challenges and concerns in order to improve and advance the field of AI. Thank you.

We can make artificial diamonds. You still pay more for the real ones. I believe art will be the same one day. It's obvious when someone with artistic ability is using these tools. Often the work is layered or even manually edited to get it that final mile. Understanding of balance, color theory, mood and more are still critical to bringing the highest quality of art. The main fear amongst artists is that they are being replaced. The ability for mediocre art to succeed will decrease. AI can make mediocre art now. But the desire for premium, human art, or at least AI art heavily influenced by a human artist, will increase in my opinion.

Just like in any creative medium, creator's block can always strike, making it hard to generate artistic content. With generative AI, this manifests itself as "prompter's block," since prompting is how you command AI to work your easel. Just because AI is doing the heavy lifting, doesn't mean creativity is not still required!

Even when using image generating LLMs like Midjourney or Stable Diffusion, the process of crafting a good prompt (the text to feed into the AI model) can be a complex task. Midjourney/Stable Diffusion prompts tend to be very convoluted, with various words to dictate the artform and other special parameters. Prompts for intricate images can turn out to be hardly human-readable. This is a unique feature of these AI models compared to text generating LLMs like ChatGPT and Claude, which can comprehend straightforward human-readable prompts like a real conversation.

You can use generative AI to create art, but the quality assessment is where the human factor and vision steps in. Is this where we are satisfied with what we have generated? Do we need a surfing squirrel in the top right corner, switch to neon disco rococo style or accept there being seven fingers per hand? "What is art" is an age old question, and it is interesting how the liberation of access to creation always leads to attempts of gatekeeping.

Artists utilizing generative AI for artistic expression face a multifaceted set of challenges, including balancing human creativity with AI assistance, navigating ethical and legal implications, overcoming technical barriers, addressing data bias, ensuring quality and originality, gaining audience acceptance, and dealing with economic impacts. They must also be adept at interpreting AI-generated results, avoiding over-reliance on AI tools, and maintaining their artistic integrity in an increasingly algorithm-driven field.
