From my recent experiences I have found it helpful to take a step back and try and analyze what exactly both parties need. I want to believe no supplier comes into a professional relationship with the aim of destroying their reputation of their business practices. Working with suppliers who may not have English as their 1st language I found that frequent communication is necessary to ensure both parties have adequate time to negotiate their position. Trying to rally against the clock and imposing penalties will ensure a hostile business relationship. It's also helpful to ensure that you are not solely reliant on one supplier. This requires you to take immense time out of your other delegated tasks but it will reap rewards for years to come.

Supplier conflicts aren’t always about poor partners—they’re often about poor diagnostics. Before jumping to cost-cutting measures, I’d start by identifying the real root of the delays. Is it due to changes in shipping routes driven by internal policies? Is port traffic forcing re-routing? Are load and destination shifts creating friction? Or was the partner simply not reliable from the beginning? Once we understand the source, we can take targeted action—like switching routes, finding resourceful partners, or analyzing whether cost pressures are localized or systemic. In my experience, fixing costs starts with fixing the context.
