Here is what I’ve found helpful in my experience: 1. Expectations: Begin by establishing classroom norms that emphasize respect and collaboration. 2. Open Communication: Create opportunities for students to express their thoughts and feelings openly. Regular check-ins can help students voice concerns before they escalate. 3. Encourage Teamwork: Design group activities, assigning roles based on individual strengths. 4. Model Conflict Resolution: Demonstrate calm and respectful ways to handle disagreements. Use scenarios to show effective communication strategies in action. 5. Encourage Reflection: After conflicts ask students to reflect on the situation. Ask to consider what led to the disagreement and how they might approach it differently.

Take the “clashers” and have them stand still in the kitchen, while the rest of the group deck brushes in their honor. Problem solved.

I immediately remove both from the classroom and call support staff to assist, I then speak to each student and get their perspective of what happened. Then address the issue from there. I’ve found that many times it’s not from what actually happened in the classroom but other issues. Still hold them accountable and adjust grades, get assistance for students or escalate. Priority is safety of all students.

My culinary experience, I have unique insights and recommendations. 13 years in the U.S. Navy as a cook, managing mess accounting and procurement during the PG1 War, ensuring crew nutrition. Attended advanced culinary classes to teach cooking skills. After my navy career, I worked for 2 more years as a food service specialist & manager, both in the Navy and civilian. This background has equipped me with a unique perspective on culinary education & management. My recommendations: Recognize Tension, Facilitate Communication, Set Clear Expectations, Assign Roles, Team-Building, Highlight Strengths, Provide Conflict Resolution Training, Create a Positive Environment, Lead by Example, Follow Up. These strategies for a productive culinary class.
