Staying focused and motivated while isolated abroad with a looming project deadline can be challenging, but it’s entirely manageable with the right mindset and strategies. I would start by breaking the project into smaller, manageable tasks with clear priorities, which makes the deadline feel less overwhelming. Setting a structured schedule that accommodates my time zone and personal energy levels helps maintain productivity. Regularly connecting with team members, even through brief check-ins, can provide both accountability and support. Lastly, taking short breaks to recharge and staying connected to home, whether through video calls or familiar routines, helps preserve mental clarity and motivation throughout the project.

First, I evaluate the amount of work to be done and create a plan, considering the deadline. The next thing I have found helpful is structuring my day using the Pomodoro technique that I have adapted for myself: I work 30 minutes and then have a 10-minute break. I stay focused on my project, and nothing distracts me from working on it. Finally, I measure the progress every day. It shows the real situation and whether I will be able to cope with everything on time.

It can be difficult to find motivation when facing a sizeable project in a solo environment. What I have found to be helpful is to create a personal roadmap for the project progress, including both concrete goals and stretch goals to entice myself to excel. Motivation is fickle and fleeting therefore ultimately, we must rely on discipline rather than motivation in order to be successful.
