    At a machine learning company, being the fractional CTO means always being ahead. We provide domain-specific ML solutions - for example, with our fintech clients, we helped them improve customer churn predictions - with continual model updates. Here are a few ways we keep our models fresh: 1. We do monthly drift checks with live data, allowing us to retrain or adjust models proactively. 2. We set up feature stores to productize consistent feature engineering across experiments. 3. We implement an A/B testing pipeline so we can launch new models in production while validating against a baseline model before full rollout.

    I try to stay on top of new techniques, but I also believe in balancing the latest innovations with what actually works well in production. In my recent project at the University of Cincinnati, we used models like XGBoost, Decision Trees, and SVM on the MIMIC-III dataset for heart failure readmission predictions. While these aren’t the newest algorithms out there, they offered strong performance, and more importantly, they were interpretable and practical for the healthcare context we were working in. That said, I’ve also been working on VAEs to address the class imbalance problem in a similar dataset. I definitely keep an eye on what's evolving, and whenever I find something that could actually bring value to the problem I’m solving.

    I've learned that staying current requires maintaining curiosity. I keep up with experts like Andrew Ng and Ethan Mollick. I prioritize sharing insights with peers on social media or through teaching. This sharpens my thinking and enhances my models. I enjoy exploring new techniques through research, hackathons, and Kaggle competitions. However, I also revisit older models with fresh perspectives. Many traditional methods can be improved with modern innovations. Integrating new technologies and data-driven insights into established processes can significantly improve efficiency and effectiveness. There is much to be gained by blending the wisdom of traditional techniques with the gains of emerging advancements.
