In my three decades of college and professional life, I have always helped someone in need and never missed my delivery targets. The trick is knowing whether someone needs your help or is exploiting you in the garb of help. We all have 24 hours only, but some use it effectively while some waste it. The point is how productive is the person you are going to help. If it's something critical and we have the opportunity to support someone, then we should. But the key is knowing the criticality and intention. If our Productive Support can help someone excel and bring out amazing results, then why not? After all, it's good karma.

Be polite but Firm and use phrases like : -I'd love to help, but I'm on a tight deadline right now. Can we talk about this tomorrow ? -Let me direct you to (colleague) who might be better to handle this -I can help with this part, the other part will have to wait until (date/time)

Take a step back and assess the asks coming your way. Agree to the ones that you can reasonably accomplish in the given timeframe, and focus on the ones that align with your own targets/goals/KPIs and those that truly “move the needle”. Politely decline or arrange an alternative timeline to address the rest.
