What's the best way to learn from other industries using 5S methodology?

One of the major challenge of implementing 5S is to allocate sufficient resources and time to carry out the 5S tasks. In a busy manufacturing or office environment, it may be tempting to postpone or skip the 5S activities, such as sorting, cleaning, or auditing, due to competing priorities or deadlines. The starting point of any lean initiatives and improvements points begin with strong foundation of 5s in the shop floor. The 5s is the set of tools which helps the plant and people to self sustain in the Improvements process going in GEMBA. we have started this 5s culture in shop floor and admin process as step1 when our plant focused on process excellence transformation. 5s is basic tool which helps Fundamentals has to be strong.

5S is much more than cleaness and organization. It's about respect for people, about discipline and culture. By cleaning up your own mess or keeping the organization of workplace, home, school, etc, you demonstrate respect for the group, the family, the community you belong to.

5S is more than a task of ORDER and CLEANUP of the place where you live or the work area; it is to sow the seed of organizational change and sprout into a way of life as an opportunity to show that the commitment to change by the organization is real and permanent.

As we walk the gemba, we need to add another S to the system..."Safety"...and look for areas of improvement to mitigate the risk associated with the insecure situations .

I find it's a good idea to have a co-facilitator that comes from outside your organization. When you know a lot about the place, there are questions that you no longer ask. When you don't know that much about the business, but do know 5S, you get to probe, ask different questions, and help people think in a new way. This allows to remove some of the pre-existing barriers to change and to find new and innovative ideas.

In my experience 5s is great, but it becomes an issue with enforcement and convincing the general employees to put things back where they belong. Otherwise 5s turns into a mess in less than a year.

Once we understand that it's about respecting people, 5S ceases to be an extra and collective task, a project or program, and becomes a part of the routine, becoming a healthy habit. Every time I hear someone say that someone needs to do 5S again, it means we've already failed in Seiketsu and Shitsuke.

it is important to have the support and commitment of the managing to implement the 5S program, if not happened the other members will feel obligated but not engaged, also it is important that the implementation team knows how to show the advantages of the program more attractive to justify the investment.

Visiting workplaces and researching best practices are both wonderful ways to learn about 5S. In my opinion, we should provide basic 5S concepts and instruction to employees, as well as some good examples. And encourage them to contribute their suggestions for improvement; this will engage the entire organization and foster ownership of the goal. The ideas and concepts you obtain in response can be developed or refined by an external or internal expert.

The main reason for 5S failure, the primary cause of standards loss, is the lack of people's involvement. Each person knows what's best for their workplace, where every object should be. Trying to make people adhere to standards and organization and cleaning routines that were defined by others who don't work in that place every day is extremely laborious and unlikely to succeed.

Adapting to one's own organization is crucial and that is why this step is important to do with the people who actually work in the area. They already know the ins and outs of the work and space they work in. Adding this level of information to what is being adapted will ensure that this matches the need of the team and that it is suited to one's own organization.

5S drives more process standardisation and continuous improvement through waste elimination. Stronger process takes care of end product or service expectations with higher quality - a key driver to business competitiveness.

Some tips which I found useful during my experience - - The main drive for 5S implementation should come from top CEO / Plant Head with review once every month. - Divide entire plant into 20-25 zones with zone owner clearly defined to do 5S audit every month on date of zone number … this would drive a focus by entire plant . - We should have one internal 5S auditor from existing old team only who should be direct 5S coordinator able to coordinate with all zone owners. - Display score of entire plant 5S zones in every zone with % score . - Motivation of active team members with rewards ( every month ) at lower operating levels is must for best improvement / KAIZENs in all zones .

As any initiative, 5S requieres a cultural change within the workspace. Not only is it important to have leadership buy-in, a critical success factor is demonstrating the positive impact to each person at each position, creating a need for sustainability bottom up and not top bottom.

A sustainable 5S program requires leadership setting the tone by modeling the desired behavior! This is true for any program or initiative to be successful. It requires change management throughout the process beginning with education. This allows the team affected to have a level set understanding about the journey before it begins. The team will need to be on-board with the process with the support of the leadership team. Remember leaders you are not leading the charge on this one. Coaching is the key here!!

5S is an incredibly simple method in terms of training and practice. And the most important criterion for its success is behavior change. Therefore, if a success story from another industry is to be inspired, it is necessary to examine this point first, how people's behavior and respect for 5s were ensured. Motivation and the ability to convince of cultural change come first.

From my previous interactions on 5S teams and implementations, it was extremely helpful to interview operators as well as timing events and review of the initial area’s identified for action.
