I think this is where Unit testing can be very useful to make it less hands on and tedious. Manually reviewing the inputs and outputs to make sure it's what you expect is important when it comes to very slight differences, but for the most part I think this is where using Unit testing really shines, especially depending on what your goal is. In most cases though I'm looking for a pretty close match to what I would expect, but I think that is where goal or application matters.
