Two employees are at odds over a project approach. How can you guide them towards a resolution?
When two team members clash over a project approach, effective resolution is key for maintaining productivity and morale. To guide them towards an understanding:
- Encourage open dialogue, allowing each employee to voice their concerns and suggestions without interruption.
- Identify shared goals to reframe the conflict as a collaborative challenge rather than a personal dispute.
- Suggest a compromise or hybrid solution that incorporates viable elements from both approaches.

Team disagreements are inevitable, but productive. Focusing on shared purpose is key. Help identify the project's ultimate goal. Frame disagreements as differing perspectives on achieving that goal, not personal clashes. Facilitate structured discussion, focusing on data and impact. Identify common ground: what elements best contribute to the objective? Emphasize the goal is the best organizational outcome. Foster collaboration, strengthening the team for future challenges. Build a culture where diverse perspectives are valued for collective success.

I don’t agree with any of your suggestions because they are reactive. High-performance teams don’t just react to challenges—they anticipate them by creating the right ‘conditions’ for people to thrive. Clear expectations around communication, decision-making and collaboration ensure teams navigate differences constructively. Emotional intelligence and psychological safety fosters awareness and adaptability, while investing in skills like problem-solving and negotiation equips teams to handle uncertainty. Cross-functional collaboration and regular check-ins surface tensions early. By embedding shared accountability and continuous learning, teams become resilient, ready to adapt and thrive in any circumstance.#FakaFekauagaCatalyst

In my experience, when two team members clash over a project approach, I have learned not to take it personal, they are both passionate, so I aim to turn that passion into purpose. Using parts or all of Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, I normally: 1. Be Proactive I address the conflict early and set a positive tone. 2. Begin with the End in Mind I refocus on the team’s overall goal. 3. Put First Things First Prioritise what truly matters for project success. What is our goal? 4. Think Win-Win Find a solution that values both perspectives.
