I organized inventory of lab materials by programming an excel sheet; I designed a metaphysical space to represent a physical space in order to save time for looking for items. For example, if you wanted pipette tips, then you would search "pipette tips" in the search tab. As a result, the excel sheet would direct you to the location of the pipette tips. In addition to organization, I have used excel for differentiation based on color coordination. I used ROYGBIV to determine the distance a potential job is to my apartment; Red corresponds to a job within 5 miles, and the remaining colors until violet would be an additional 5 miles from my location.

A simple way to improve data formatting would be to take the time to learn pivot tables. Pivot tables are most useful for excel sheets that contain large amounts of data. Using a pivot table can help you analyze, summarize, and display data in a clearer format to be used either for data entry or presenting information efficiently. One other suggestion would be xlookup. It is basically a hybrid of vlookup and hlookup, while looking for an exact match allowing you to search rows and columns. My personal favorite is you are able to have input if no exact match is returned. For example, you would have "0" instead of the annoying "#N/A" we are all familiar with.

Effective design of macro's with software packages can help (e.g. integration of values from MS access to MS Excel, input from a pro forma via MS Word), or if the data input clerk is well versed in coding and they have authority to chop, change, re-shape bits of coding to increase automation then this might benefit. These are functions of the role that I would not expect a Data Entry Clerk to take part in, unless they are more senior. Normally a data entry inputter will be given readily structured data to input into computer, the whole role is generally straight forward and has very little involvement in way of coding or macro design.

Experience in the role is helpful with validation and verification, as any anomalies or unexpected values would be easily spotted, the real problem comes when you have legitimate looking data that ends up creating a skewed report - a basic example, one year I worked for wine company promoting bulk buying from wholesaler, someone early in the order entry process allowed customers with name of "Luke Skywalker", "Han Solo" etc, clearly these are fictional, but because the Data Entry Clerk did not know who the names referred to the orders where inadvertently processed, the management were not amused.
