How can drones use AI and autonomy for surveillance and security?

Absolutely, AI and autonomy will play pivotal roles in enhancing drone capabilities in the future. AI empowers drones to process data and act dynamically, breaking free from rigid commands. On the other hand, autonomy measures a drone's independence, from C2 to full authority decision-making powers. Striking the right balance ensures drones efficiently navigate and adapt in diverse scenarios. This is a great summary. In both surveillance and security this is still a long way off for the private sector. The expectation out there is that the currently available UASs are simply able to be turned on for fully autonomous and AI operations.

On the other end of the spectrum these are commonly used in Drones today where we know have anti-collision capabilties, waypoint and flight planning navigation where the drone manages itself to keep on track, we have 'AI' built into alot of gimbal and camera systems to track and help the user better understand what they are looking at.

Applications of video AI in IR are more challenging than RGB, given the monochromatic aspects coupled with noise and blurring. This holds true, but the practical application in private security in South Africa is a little more complex to achieve. All of this needs to be secured pre-, mid-, and post-flight. AI comes into the conversation with autonomous navigation, real-time threat detection, data analysis, and a whole lot more.

A good summary, but for me the main focus of AI right now is using it as a tool to enhance the abilities of the human operator. The idea of removing the human from the equation turns a lot of people off from the huge range of benefits that AI will bring us.

Safety is a real challenge still. True AI and Autonomy mean the drone will 'think' and navigate itself. It will determine how and where to fly to best meet it's objectives, not simply fly within a ruleset. Privacy is another challenge when thinking about increased use of self thinking flying robots. Industry will continue to ponder and innovate these challenges while offering value to the user.

Overcoming the hurdles of regulation will be a huge challenge in the coming years. Even for the hobby flyers, the rules and regulations in the UK can be tricky to follow and change from year to year. Companies pushing the boundaries of both AI and UAV technology need to be aware of the regulations not just in their own country, but of anywhere they want to market around the globe.
