The most empathetic approach is the "sandwich", which I believe is from Toastmasters. He's my own version after coaching leaders for more than 20 years. Begin with some real honest praise, the thing you liked the most about the persons presentation, or work. I usually find something less personal and more technical. How the material was on point, the slides well prepared and on point, their management of the stage, etc. Be specific. Then the meat, this is where you will give them an idea, or observation on how/where to improve. Deliver this with empathy. Finally, top the sandwich off with a very personal thing you liked, or thought worked, their secret sauce to make the whole sandwich taste great and stick with them as a memory.

One of my clients told me they had to submit abstracts with a co-presenter. One co-presenter was amazing to work with, the other not so much. The experience for my client was a constant slap in the face...they decided to opt out of the presentation with the other presenter.
