This includes developing an awareness of where new tools are being implemented and how they fit into existing systems. Education across all levels of the organization is key. This education cannot be just for the average user but also for those who have elevated privileges (i.e. admins) and execs. Each group should have training specific to their level of knowledge and access to data & systems. Regarding the average user, it has been my experience that when they are empowered with the "why" of a security control they can be its biggest advocate. This is especially the case when they understand what can happen if the control is not in place.

Balancing UX and cybersecurity is not a zero-sum game it’s a design philosophy. Security should be frictionless, embedded in intuitive workflows, not imposed as obstacles. Risk is inevitable, but maturity lies in contextualizing threats without eroding usability. A well-architected system anticipates user behavior, integrates adaptive controls, and leverages risk-based authentication to secure access without degrading experience. The goal isn’t to eliminate risk it’s to manage it without compromising trust or agility

There are so many frameworks now and some companies have multiple frameworks that apply to their business. Yet, most, if not all, overlap in some way. That's why the framework I like to use is from the Center for Internet Security (CIS). CIS is an independent org that focuses strictly on cybersecurity regardless of industry. They follow a best practice approach. Because of this their framework maps to more than 12 prominent industry frameworks like NIST CSF, 800-53, ISO 27001,PCI, HIPAA, SOC2, etc. If you haven't head of CIS Controls, I suggest you take a look. It will streamline your risk assessment efforts, for sure.

Not every feature or flow carries the same level of risk. A login page deserves more scrutiny than a newsletter sign-up. Conduct ongoing threat modeling and risk mapping, then apply security controls where they matter most. This approach helps you avoid over-securing low-risk areas, preserving the user experience while staying protected where it counts.

Offer streamlined options like push notifications via Microsoft Authenticator and trusted device recognition. This approach secures access while reducing friction, ensuring high protection without overwhelming users.

Security Isn’t Static—and Neither Is UX Threat landscapes evolve daily. Cyber attackers are constantly finding new angles, while user expectations shift just as fast, driven by innovation and emerging technologies. What worked yesterday might not cut it tomorrow. That's why treating cybersecurity and UX as set-it-and-forget-it tasks is a recipe for obsolescence. Instead, forward-thinking teams adopt a mindset of constant iteration. This means continuously evaluating how security measures impact your users, and just as importantly, how user behavior might be introducing new security risks.

TECH & HUMAN security controls will always be set to MAX reasonable levels. It is a non-issue in the real world. Users have NO CHOICE with O/S enforced GPO settings. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE - lol Often a lack of advance CHG MGT & training can create bad 1st UX impressions. More rarely, not enough TESTING was done, but fine-tuning security can help. Most workers know to abide by security & privacy policies. Security is a legal & fiduciary requirement that is important to business. IMPROVE USER SUPPORT: 1. Advance CHG MGT 2. Training DOCs 3. Response team for CHG rollouts 4. Pilot Test CHG 5. Fan out CHG gradually 6. Continual security awareness 7. Emphasize ROLE each person plays 8. Intranet security site (policies, best practices)
