Simply put: scenarios are useful for giving context for a task during a usability test. Without it, users may reluctantly perform a task and possibly end the task confused. For example, maybe you are giving someone a task regarding a page on Zillow about a home. The core task might be to, "Find a way to see what the interior of the home on this page looks like." There are many reasons and motivations for why someone would do this and how. Maybe you might have a specific scenario/need in mind for this feature b/c of a persona or past data patterns. Instead of just, "Find a way..." preface the task with a scenario that is driving this person to do this. And make sure that your participant is screened to have a similar motive.

It gives a complete picture of the user that how would a person use the product, what would motivate that person, their emotions and context.
