An interesting pattern that has emerged in the recent years is to use both Virtualisation and Containerisation at the same time. Partly driven by Kubernetes, it makes sense to use both at the same time. Your cloud provider will leverage virtualisation to run Linux hosts, which will in turn run containers. This allows you to work at both levels of granularity - VMs which live in order of hours to days to months, and containers that can live in order of seconds to days to weeks.

Ensuring the security of VMs, hypervisors, and the virtualization management infrastructure is critical to prevent breaches and data leaks.

The main selling point for containers is that you can get some of the benefits of a VM (isolated, self-contained environment, resource control, etc) with smaller overheads and less hustle. That line is getting thinner with technologies like microVMs, which promise stronger isolation with a much smaller penalty than that of a full-fledged VM. Watch that space.
