In my personal experience pair programming has helped me significantly in the initial phase of career to learn and overcome various challenges as well as get familiar with the best practices in the industry. For a junior level developer, pair programming is crucial to follow the coding standards as well as overcome the challenges faced in the development. Whereas, for a higher experience level personnel, pair programming can help get a different perspective by working with other developers which can eventually lead to an efficient, readable and reusable code.

Through my experimentation with pair programming, I have observed accelerated learning, the creation of cleaner code, swifter problem-solving, reduced ambiguity, and ultimately, a positive change in throughput.

You don't need to select a partner based on skill level. We use this guideline: 𝗜𝗳 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗢𝗥 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝘂𝗽 This means an inexperienced DEV will find many things non-trivial so they should ideally pair a lot of the time. The "OR crucial" part means if we're doing something where we need to ensure high quality (minimise human mistakes) eg merging a branch or a 3am deployment, then get 2 pairs of eyes on it - even if it's trivial. Pairing can be tiring so I suggest regular check-ins (say every 15 mins). Anyone can say: "Let's do a check-in. How are we feeling?". Neext do a 'fist of five' vote (hold up 0 to 5 fingers). Agree on a score that means "we need a break".

Tool Utilisation: Employ tools like Visual Studio Code’s Live Share or JetBrains’ Code With Me to facilitate seamless pair programming sessions, especially in a distributed team environment.

Like any agile practice, Pair Programming also presents certain challenges when not executed correctly. Some common challenges arise from a poor understanding of the practice itself, such as having two people attempting to complete a single job, a lack of ownership, difficulties in measuring performance, invasion of privacy, and a sense of restricted freedom. While there is some truth to these challenges, there are various ways to address them and enhance the effectiveness of Pair Programming

Understand the Practice: Gain a solid understanding and start experimenting. Embrace a Learning Mindset: Be prepared to learn, actively listen, and refine the process as you progress. Establish Ways of Working (WOW): Reach agreements on breaks, role-switching intervals, code ownership, and documentation standards. Create a small-sized WOW for smoother collaboration. Conduct Retrospectives: End each session with a short retrospective, focusing on learning and preparation for the next session.
