How do you evaluate and select new talent and projects for A&R consideration?

It's all about the soul! We sift through diamonds in the rough, seeking that unique spark igniting passion. Authenticity reigns supreme. A compelling narrative, a captivating voice, and a genuine connection to their art – that's the magic we chase. We listen for that goosebump moment, that raw emotion that transcends trends. It's about nurturing potential, believing in dreams, and crafting careers that resonate with the world.

This includes factors like sound quality, arrangement, mixing, and mastering. Does the music sound professional and polished?

I prioritize an artist's uniqueness first, focusing on the distinctiveness of their sound and their potential to evolve that sound into something bigger. Next, I assess their work ethic and consistency, as these are crucial for long-term growth. Community is another key factor; I look at how well an artist has been able to push themselves, build a following, and engage with their audience. I pay close attention to interactions on their posts and how they respond to engagement. My main scouting tools are social media and referrals from other A&Rs. Occasionally, I attend events and discover artists I like, but rather than approaching them immediately, I observe first and then reach out later through social media.

Does the artist have a unique sound and fresh perspective, or are they simply imitating existing trends? This includes aspects such as the melody, the harmony, the rhythm, the lyrics, and the overall mood and vibe of the music.

Originality in music isn’t just about distinct melodies or lyrics, it’s about anticipating where music is headed. The best A&Rs don’t follow trends; they predict them. I regularly dig through SoundCloud, where some of the most experimental artists push creative boundaries before hitting the mainstream. As both a producer and an A&R, this exploration helps me spot unique talent early and fuels my own creativity. True originality isn’t just sounding fresh today, it’s shaping tomorrow’s sound. By seeking artists who innovate rather than imitate, labels can stay ahead of the curve and invest in music that defines the future.

I have found it very important to pay attention to geopolitical events happening around the world, as these can often become the impetus for future scripts that will form the plots of movies and TV shows. The practice of anticipating what our clients' future needs might be has been extremely beneficial for us, allowing us to stay ahead of the curve by offering our clients what our competitors can’t.
