We know how to escalate issues in a timely manner and avoid unnecessary delays. No, you don't need a large team to manage a large set of databases. You only need 3-4 very skilled dba's who are not foul of miner tasks as backups, but those few skilled dba's should be able to script and automate as much as possible. Let’s be honest right from the start here. A DBA’s job is to be a Database Administrator, not a pie splitter. I wouldn’t allow a Developer to breath on a database of mine, let alone give them access to decide themselves, that’s what Test/Dev is for. But a golden rule is to use a test or sandbox environment to validate your thoughts or my thoughts before executing it on production. With the best documentation a dba still needs to be able to interpret that documentation and sense if the documentation is not correct.

You need to be able to track all changes on your database in all environments. The 5W1H is a questioning approach and a problem-solving method that answers all the basic elements within a problem: what, who, when, where, why, and how. If you do not provide an infrastructure where you can get answers to all your questions, you may have many headaches in the future. DB versioning control is a must, otherwise, you may have to use DB compare tools, extending your deployment times until the morning.

I can speak from my own experience that Documenting beyond just DB design, config, usage, is valuable. Using Confluence docs to document things such as a list of SSRS reports that are scheduled, SQL Agent Jobs are that enabled and their schedule, AG Failover steps before and after, the list can be endless of what can be documented.

Yes I agree with that. DBAs can write their own standards, and they must be also published to development teams. So to enforce security, what features are allowed or not (for example we don't allow database links), or for example to build new databases or servers. DBAs don't stay forever in a company and the next ones must have some documentation to guide them, at least at the beginning of their duties. We need standardized environments to be able to automatize/patch and have the same behavior from the databases.

SQL Server Profiler isn't as good of a tool as some people might think it is. It's resource-intensive, which is the last thing you would want on an already heavily used instance. There are far better options currently available either built into SQL Server like Extended Events, a lightweight performance monitoring system that uses minimal performance resources, or Query Store, which provides insight on query plan choice and performance for SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance. And there are tools built by community members that take advantage of SQL Server's existing performance metrics, like Brent Ozar's First Responder Kit, Erik Darling's sp_HumanEvents, or PSBlitz which I actively develop and maintain.

Since someone took a negative stand on SQL Profiler, I find that it's only "Resource Intensive" when used incorrectly by people that don't actually know the correct methods to use it. So, as with all else, I'll say "It Depends". To the other great point, I agree... there are a lot of incredible tools out there. When and how should you use them? Again, "It Depends". What that means is that you should actually know the server(s) and how SQL Server actually works before you do any "administration". A grand example of that is, do you actually know what's happening when you do Index Maintenance and why you might actually be crippling your server on the proverbial "morning after" or that you may be perpetuating Page Splits? Most, do not.

checking AWR report for each and every database without any performance issue is not a good approach, I believe a better approach to monitor the database performance is to check the alerts that the DBA usually receive and try to figure it out if anything they can do to resolve those alerts on a permanent basis, if possible and for other improvements in database a DBA can check the task which comes on a frequent basis like DB Refresh , cloning etc. and figure out a way how they can do it better , in a less no. Of time, without less chances of error etc.

It is highly recommended when you work alone, but in a shared environment, with several administrators, for me it is the first and main rule. Never ever use a graphical tool to change anything. All changes, even the simplest ones, should be made with a script that you can properly document and that helps you have a complete view of what you are doing. Using graphical tools may seem easier, but they are the gate to disaster.
