How can you effectively follow up on action items from daily stand-ups?

Since daily stand ups are time boxed events, any issues that needs to be addressed can be noted down and worked outside the meetings, if it is not fitting in the allotted time. A separate discussion with accountable team member, a one on one meeting helps to explain, understand the issue. If it a spike it could be discussed and assigned to different team members. Each of these issues, assigned owners be captured and tracked in the project management tool used to track for updates.

Effectively follow up on action items from daily stand-ups by documenting them clearly and sharing the list with the team. Assign ownership for each action item and set deadlines. During subsequent stand-ups, review progress on previous action items and address any obstacles. Encourage team members to communicate proactively if they encounter challenges. Assigning owners and clearly defining the deadline will actually clear any ambiguity the team have. When everyone is well informed about their task and when it is expected, its easier for the SM to follow up with the team. It also prevents team from wasting their time on unnecessary tasks. But assigning tasks should always be backed by a strong follow up.

During the stand-up just note down the blockers and any other action items and take them offline with the relevant people just after the meeting. Depending on the size, urgency and complexity of the item, it can be actioned immediately in the next 10 minutes for example, added to the board with proper description and owner assigned or added to the backlog to be handled at later stage.
