1 Cultural Competence

Cultural competence is the ability to understand, respect, and respond to the values, beliefs, and practices of people from different cultural backgrounds - a skill that is essential for social workers to cultivate. To enhance their cultural competence, social workers should learn about the history, traditions, and norms of the populations they serve, as well as their current challenges and strengths. Seeking feedback and guidance from cultural experts, mentors, or peers who have experience working with diverse populations can also be beneficial. Moreover, it is important for social workers to reflect on their own cultural identity, values, and biases and consider how they may affect their interactions with others. Lastly, adapting their communication style, interventions, and evaluation methods to suit the preferences and needs of their clients and partners can help them build better relationships.

2 Language Access

Language access is the provision of interpretation and translation services to ensure that people who have limited English proficiency or use other modes of communication can access and understand information and services. As a legal and ethical obligation, social workers must ensure language access to prevent misunderstandings, errors, and discrimination that may jeopardize the well-being and rights of their clients and partners. To do so, they should assess the language needs and preferences of their clients and partners, document them in their records, use qualified interpreters and translators trained in social work terminology, ethics, and confidentiality, avoid using family members, friends, or untrained staff as interpreters or translators, check for comprehension and accuracy of the interpretation or translation, and clarify any doubts or questions.

3 Structural Awareness

Structural awareness is the recognition of how social, economic, and political factors influence the opportunities, resources, and outcomes of people from different backgrounds. This is an important concept for social workers to understand in order to identify and address systemic barriers and injustices that affect their clients and partners. To increase their structural awareness, social workers should analyze how policies, laws, and institutions affect access and quality of services for diverse populations, collaborate with community leaders that represent and empower diverse populations, educate themselves and others about the history of oppression and discrimination, and practice self-care when working with diverse populations. Moreover, they should advocate for changes that promote equity and inclusion, support initiatives and goals of community leaders, challenge attitudes that perpetuate oppression and discrimination, and seek support from colleagues and supervisors.
