At the end of the day, you ALWAYS want to underpromise and overdeliver. This can be tough when you're first starting out and willing to say anything to get someone's credit card information. If you're in the position to say no to a client who has the potential to be a nightmare, I'd just move on if they expect too much. However, if you're good at what you do, you should be able to communicate what they should expect at the beginning, and be able to deliver results that are better than they expected. Our best clients are ones who know at least a little about how marketing/search engines work, since they understand that what we do takes time, but works wonders in the long run.
