People connect to our stories. There's nothing wrong with a client asking a personal question unless it crosses the lines of social or moral norms. The best approach is to establish boundaries by saying something like: "I appreciate your interest in my life outside of this context, but there are some topics I simply don't get into...and that is one of them. What I can tell you is..." You can finish by sharing something off topic, or something less sensitive. Unless you're dealing with a narcissist, they'll likely honor your redirection.

This is a pretty general scenario. How personal the questions are determine where you will go in response. Often my clients like to know some background one and where ‘I’ve come from’. I tend to use these questions as a chance to get to know them as well. It’s a rare situation when it crosses any lines. To me it’s a lot about building relationships.
