El Niño expected to drive Atlantic storm activity as countdown to hurricane season begins

The countdown is on — coastal communities from the Gulf across the entire Eastern Seaboard are making final preparations for the start of Atlantic hurricane season — now just one month away.

WARM WATERS AND POTENTIAL SUPER EL NIÑO COULD 'SUPERCHARGE' START TO EASTERN PACIFIC HURRICANE SEASON

A developing El Niño is expected to fully take hold this summer and dominate both the Atlantic and the Pacific basins — suppressing potential tropical development in the Atlantic, while supercharging storms in the Eastern Pacific, which begins its hurricane season on May 15.

El Niño is one of three phases of a climate cycle called the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). It describes natural temperature changes in the central Pacific Ocean that alter atmospheric circulation and can greatly influence global weather.

WHAT ARE EL NINO AND LA NINA CLIMATE PATTERNS?

El Niño describes warmer than average water across the equatorial Pacific, while La Niña describes colder than average water conditions, and ENSO neutral refers to a state where temperatures are close to average.

During El Niño, above-average water temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean produce strong winds that hinder tropical development in the Atlantic.

"The warmer waters and enhanced rising air across the Pacific create "hostile" upper-level winds that blow across the Caribbean and the Main Development Region (MDR)," the FOX Forecast Center said.

"These strong westerly winds can tilt or disrupt a developing storm's structure, preventing intensification and promoting a more stable atmosphere."

THE COST OF DISASTER: HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HOME AHEAD OF HURRICANE SEASON

Those upper level winds generally rip apart developing tropical systems, preventing them from organizing into powerful hurricanes.

Furthermore, experts believe this El Niño could be much stronger than the average event, with computer forecast models from both NOAA and Columbia's International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) suggesting that a "Super El Niño" could form this summer, which would only act to further strengthen those hostile winds.

The Atlantic basin averages 14 named storms and 7 hurricanes. During El Niño years, those averages typically drop to roughly 10 storms and five hurricanes.

However, exactly when El Niño develops will play a key role in how much protection the Atlantic sees this season.

If El Niño does not emerge until late August or beyond, there will be a window of greater opportunity for hurricanes to form in the Gulf — a region where the majority of tropical development occurs during the first half of the season.

"Early in the season, particularly in June, ‘homegrown’ systems are most common," the FOX Forecast Center said.

"These typically form in areas such as the Gulf and portions of the Southeast U.S. coastline."

While these areas are more conducive for development, these systems also tend to be weaker since they have less water over which to strengthen.

The Forecast Center noted that June activity has generally been limited during El Niño years — meaning that if El Niño can take hold over the next two months, it could further suppress the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.

HURRICANE HQ: CHANCE OF GULF HURRICANES DROPS TO 14 PERCENT DURING EL NIÑO SUMMERS

Looking at recent El Niño events, 2023 saw three named storms develop in June, while only one storm formed in 2015 and there were no named storms in June 2009.

Climatologically, the first hurricane in the Atlantic does not form until Aug. 11 and the season peaks on Sep. 10.

But both the FOX Forecast Center and FOX Weather Hurricane Specialist Bryan Norcross cautioned that it only takes one storm to cause major impacts.

Florida braces for severe storms bringing damaging winds, isolated tornado threat to kick off the weekend

The Sunshine State is kicking off the first weekend of May with a round of severe storms on Saturday, which bring the risk of strong, damaging winds and an isolated tornado.

A strong cold front is set to sweep through Florida on Saturday. Ahead of the front, a surge of deep tropical moisture and robust atmospheric energy will set the stage for storm development.

The FOX Forecast Center said near-record heat will also fuel the storm threat, creating an environment capable of supporting strong, long-lived storms.

The primary concern with this system will be the transition of scattered activity into an organized squall line or clusters of storms by early afternoon into the evening, the FOX Forecast Center said.

A level 2 out of 5 severe storm threat stretches from the southernmost point of Georgia into central Florida, bringing a risk for major cities like Tallahassee, Jacksonville and Daytona Beach.

As the storms push south, a persistent and strengthening low-level jet will provide the necessary wind shear to transform these into severe storms.

An increasing threat for damaging straight-line winds with gusts of 60+ mph extends from the Florida Panhandle through the Interstate 4 corridor, including cities like Tampa, Orlando and Jacksonville.

TORNADO SAFETY: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TAKING SHELTER DURING SEVERE WEATHER

Throughout the afternoon, there is a possibility for an isolated tornado as severe storms interact with coastal breezes, the FOX Forecast Center said.

As the cold front pushes into central Florida during the evening hours, the storms should begin to lose strength. However, the high-energy environment will keep the severe risk somewhat elevated well after sunset.

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. – The Black Diamond Pool in Yellowstone National Park erupted Wednesday, sending plumes of steam and muddy debris hundreds of feet into the air.

The latest eruption marks the second time the pool has exploded in a week. The first one occurred on Tuesday.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the latest event may be one of the largest eruptions at the pool.

"This is perhaps the largest eruption of the pool since the 2024 explosion and is an important demonstration of hydrothermal hazards in Yellowstone National Park," the USGS said in a social media post.

On July 23, 2024, a hydrothermal explosion at the Black Diamond Pool destroyed a boardwalk and sent visitors running for safety. No injuries were reported.

Since then, sporadic eruptions have been common, occasionally hurling muddy water tens of feet into the air, according to the USGS.

There have been three additional eruptions so far this year, but Wednesday’s was the first to occur during the day and without the camera being covered by ice.

The pool, located in Biscuit Basin, is known for its large, murky blue water, which formed after an earthquake in July 2006 and was followed by several days of explosive eruptions.

Soft sinter and sparse vegetation typically surround the area, while outflow from the pool forms braided channels of orange and green-colored thermophiles.

A coastal storm is expected to deliver a glancing blow to the Northeastern part of the Interstate 95 corridor but will certainly cloud the first half of the weekend for millions.

Ahead of the storm, another round of rain will punctuate what's been a soggy workweek for the region, as it moves through the Ohio Valley and western New York into the Northeast and New England through the day and into the evening on Friday.

The coastal storm is expected to form off the coast of North Carolina early Saturday and track up the Eastern Seaboard through the day.

CAMP MYSTIC WILL NOT REOPEN IN 2026 FOLLOWING DEADLY JULY 4 FLOODING IN TEXAS

While a path closer to the coastline would deliver more rain to the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast, current forecast models show that the storm will remain somewhat weak and farther offshore.

As a result, most coastal areas will only see less than a quarter of an inch of total rainfall.

Washington, D.C., New York, Philadelphia and Boston will see rain begin late Saturday afternoon, before quickly tapering off by Sunday morning.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, a closer track would bring steadier rain Sunday, along the I-95 corridor from Rhode Island to Maine.

However, this rain will be beneficial for the coastal parts of New England and the Northeast, which are currently experiencing severe to moderate drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

MILLIONS ACROSS NORTHEAST AND MID-ATLANTIC EXPECTED TO SEE UNSEASONABLE TEMPERATURES THROUGH THE START OF MAY

The rain will be accompanied by temperatures 10 to 15 degrees below average for this time of year, with overnight lows in the 40s and even the 30s across the region this weekend — conditions more reminiscent of early spring or late fall.

Beyond the weekend, long-range forecasts show more rain moving across the country into the Northeast next week.

SILVER SPRINGS, Nev. — A series of earthquakes shook western Nevada early Friday. At least four quakes were centered roughly 10 miles southeast of Silver Springs, Nevada, headlined by a magnitude 4.9 quake that happened just after 1 a.m. local time.

MAGNITUDE 4.4 IS LATEST IN SERIES OF EARTHQUAKES TO HIT NEVADA

The USGS has recorded at least three other quakes in the immediate vicinity within 24 hours, including a magnitude 4.1 jolt that struck shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday.

Shaking was also felt in Reno and Carson City early Friday. Officials in Lyon County said there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, but said they were continuing to assess the situation.

On May 1, a Full Flower Micromoon will soar into the sky, and don't be fooled by the belittling title, the micromoon will tower over the night sky.

The flower moon will blossom into the sky and reach peak illumination at 1:23 p.m. ET, according to the Farmers Almanac.

A micromoon occurs when the moon is at its farthest point from Earth in its orbit, known as apogee, the counterpart to a supermoon, when the moon is at its closest point.

Massive sea lion named Chonkers is capturing hearts in this coastal city

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - A sea lion named Chonkers is capturing hearts and making waves on social media.

Laying amid the dozens of sea lions on Pier 39 in San Francisco, California, Chonkers stands out in the crowd because of his - you guessed it - chunkiness.

Chonkers is enormous compared to the rest of the sea lions that gather daily to sunbathe and rest on the pier's K-dock.

The 2,000-pound steller sea lion is a different species than his dockmates, and he weighs nearly twice as much.

Steller sea lions can weigh up to 2,500 pounds, while California sea lions tend to be up to 900 pounds, according to the Marine Mammal Center.

Male steller sea lions can grow up to 11 feet in length and weigh almost 2,500 pounds. Females are much smaller and may grow to 9 feet in length and weigh 1,000 pounds.

The Marine Mammal Center said adult male steller sea lions have a bulky build and a very thick neck with longer fur that resembles a lion's mane, hence the name "sea lion."

COCAINE POLLUTION HAS SHARKS AND SALMON OFF THE RAILS — AND IT'S NOT THEIR FAULT

The sea lion was first reported at Pier 39 on March 13. Stellar sea lions aren't as common as California sea lions in the area, but the Marine Mammal Center said it isn't the first time it's happened.

Steller sea lions have been reported at Pier 39 before, most notably May 2023, the center said. The species, especially males, can travel long distances in a season.

LOCAL STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED IN CALIFORNIA OVER INVASIVE SPECIES THREAT

The Marine Mammal Center said steller sea lions are similar in appearance to California sea lions and are sometimes confused with them. But the animal is much larger and lighter in color.

They need undisturbed land habitat to rest, molt, socialize, mate, give birth and nurse small pups during breeding season, which runs from mid-May to mid-July.

The Marine Mammal Center said steller sea lions are highly social animals and may rest in large groups, including with California sea lions, overlapping their bodies.

It's important to note that at this time of year, large steller males are often more underweight than normal as they typically, but not always, consume less food during this time, sometimes fasting for up to two months, according to the Marine Mammal Center.

Experts said they consume a wide range of prey, foraging and feeding primarily at night both near and offshore, including several types of fish, squid and octopuses.

"While we're keeping an eye on ocean temperatures, it's really too early at this point to say whether that'd be a contributing factor," Marine Mammal Center Associate Director of Public Relations Giancarlo Rulli said. Pier 39 said a few California sea lions started lounging out shortly after the Loma Prieta earthquake hit San Francisco in October 1989. By the following January, the animals started to arrive in droves and completely took over the K-dock.

Zoo animal killed after dangerous hailstorm batters Missouri, causing statewide damage

SPRINGFIELD, Missouri - An emu was killed after large, softball-sized hail slammed a Missouri zoo during a severe weather event Tuesday morning.

The 21-year-old emu was at Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield, MO, when a dangerous hailstorm struck the area, killing the animal.

TEXAS CITY DEVASTATED BY TORNADO DAMAGE AS MULTI-DAY SEVERE WEATHER OUTBREAK TAKES AIM AT MILLIONS

A male rhea, a bird similar to an ostrich, was also injured, and the zoo sustained significant damage.

According to a social media post, no guests, staff or other animals were injured, but the zoo remained closed through April 30.

After the zoo shared the update, many patrons took to social media to express their condolences.

One user wrote, "I’m so sorry you lost your emu and that your rhea is hospitalized. It’s never easy to lose an animal. We grow close to them, learn their mannerisms and care for them daily."

Another commented, "So sorry to hear about the loss of the beloved emu. Thankful for every worker and volunteer who worked hard to save the animals in weather that was worse than expected."

A third added, "Every time we have a storm, I think of all animals. I’m sorry about Adam. Animals are all so very precious. Thank you for caring for them."

The National Weather Service (NWS) said it had predicted larger-than-normal hail for the storm, but the event exceeded expectations.

"As far as meteorology, this was definitely an unusual event," an NWS official said.

Hailstones can vary in size, with each size comparable to an average household object, such as coins, sports balls or fruit.

The NWS considers giant hail to be 2.75 inches or larger, bigger than baseballs. Stones can sometimes reach the size of grapefruits or softballs.

Hail of that size can cause significant damage to aircraft, homes and vehicles. It can also injure or kill people or animals not under shelter, according to the NWS.

WHAT CAUSES HAIL TO BE DIFFERENT SIZES?

Different sizes of hail fall at different speeds, as well. Larger hailstones fall faster than smaller ones, increasing the potential for damage.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, the largest hail reported in Missouri during the storm was 4.75 inches, while hailstones measuring 4 inches struck the zoo.

Additional damage was reported across the state, including minor tree and roof damage in Springfield.

In Glidewell, there were reports of damage to vehicles and homes, with tennis ball-sized hail tearing off gutters.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The United States' most volatile fault line is overdue for an earthquake, and if one occurs, it could be catastrophic for one of California's most populated regions.

The San Andreas Fault has long been the subject of doomsday films—and for good reason. This dangerous continental transform fault stretches roughly 800 miles through California, cutting through major population centers that could be devastated in the event of a large earthquake.

WHAT ARE THE LARGEST EARTHQUAKES TO STRIKE THE US?

The Hayward fault, part of the San Andreas Fault system, runs 74 miles through part of the San Francisco Bay Area, and research shows the seismically active fault is well overdue for an earthquake – so scientists are mapping the threat.

The past five major earthquakes on the Hayward Fault have occurred roughly every 140 years on average, and we are now well beyond that interval since the fault’s last major event in 1868, according to the UC Berkeley Seismology Lab.

WHAT TO DO DURING AND AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE

A recent study analyzed what would happen in the event of a magnitude 7.0 earthquake – and the results are concerning.

Scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) simulated 50 different possible earthquakes to understand realistic outcomes of how strong seismological events on the Hayward Fault would play out – while establishing a database to better understand the impact of potential earthquakes in the future.

TO STUDY CALIFORNIA’S LARGEST ACTIVE VOLCANO, SCIENTISTS FIRST HAVE TO CLIMB IT

In a statement, the team said that a dangerous quake "could cause extensive damage to such a dense population zone."

The study mapped the impacts of ground-motion intensity across the Bay Area and how shaking would look in different scenarios – identifying vulnerable areas and potential threat zones before disaster strikes.

The US Geological Survey said in a report called the "HayWired Scenario" that a magnitude 7.0 earthquake under Oakland could kill as many as 800 people and injure up to 18,000.

Given the devastating potential, the study identified how strong shaking could be, how it varies in different locations and the physical factors that control shaking – and aims to improve ground-motion prediction and seismic hazard analysis in the event of an earthquake.

"We are interested in learning what the ground motion for a typical magnitude 7 earthquake in the Bay Area could be, so that we can work with engineers to make sure that the infrastructure and buildings in the Bay Area can withstand this motion," author and LLNL scientist Arben Pitarka said. "With that information, we can also start preparations for retrofitting some of the vulnerable structures."

The U.S. Geological Survey estimates a 14.3% chance of a magnitude 6.7 or larger event by 2034 and a 33% chance before 2043 — making the Hayward fault the most dangerous in the Bay Area.

The cities on and immediately near the fault include Oakland, Berkeley, Hayward, Fremont, San Leandro, Richmond, El Cerrito and Milpitas, putting millions at risk; that's why scientists are gathering data to prepare ahead of a potentially tragic tremor.

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

"With this new database, not only can we provide better estimates of the expected ground motion from this type of earthquake, but we can also locate areas that are susceptible to very strong shaking in the San Francisco Bay Area," Pitarka said.

The simulations show that directional pulses and basin amplification could lead to especially strong and prolonged shaking, increasing risks for flexible buildings and in basin regions.

HOW SAN FRANCISCO WAS DEVASTATED BY THE 1906 EARTHQUAKE

In the future, researchers aim to extend their simulations to model earthquakes on the San Andreas Fault, which can produce magnitude 7.5 earthquakes or larger, with a proven history of spawning destructive earthquakes.

Camp Mystic will not reopen in 2026 following deadly July 4 flooding in Texas

KERR COUNTY, Texas– Camp Mystic, the all-girls Christian summer camp where 28 people died during catastrophic flooding last July, will not reopen for the 2026 season.

The summer camp withdrew its camp license application for the 2026 summer season amid an ongoing investigation into the handling of catastrophic flooding last year on Thursday.

CAMP COUNSELORS, NEIGHBORS DISPLAY 'SELFLESS COURAGE' DURING DEADLY TEXAS FLOODING

"No administrative process or summer season should move forward while families continue to grieve, while investigations continue and while so many Texans still carry the pain of last July’s tragedy," the camp said in a statement.

The devastating flooding of the Guadalupe River on July 4, 2025, left more than 100 people dead across Texas Hill Country.

At the time, Camp Mystic was housing 750 girls when the floodwaters swept in.

Following its application withdrawal, Camp Mystic commended the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) for their testimony this week throughout the investigation.

The camp said the decision to withdraw is "intended to remove any doubt that Camp Mystic has heard the concerns expressed by grieving families, members of the Texas House and Senate investigating committees and citizens" across Texas.

"Camp Mystic will continue to fully cooperate with all ongoing investigations, comply with every lawful requirement and continue supporting recovery and healing efforts," the camp said. "Today is not about camp operations. It is about respect for the families, accountability to the public and reverence for the memory of the lives lost."

Owners of the camp previously said they hoped to reopen in late May, and were planning to use only parts of the facility that did not flood, the Associated Press reported.

The plans sparked significant outrage from victims’ families and officials, who urged regulators to deny the camp’s license, which was under review by Texas officials.

During a legislative hearing earlier this week, lawmakers scrutinized the camp’s role in the disaster, citing inadequate operations, delayed responses to flash flood warnings and insufficient emergency training for counselors, according to the AP.

SAN JOAQUIN, Calif. - A state of emergency was declared in San Joaquin County over concerns about a fast-spreading invasive species plaguing California’s waterways.

The San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to issue a local emergency in response to the threat posed by the golden mussels in the San Joaquin Delta.

"The Delta is central to San Joaquin County’s identity, and with more than two-thirds of the Delta within our county, protecting it must remain a top priority," Paul Canepa, a member of the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors, said.

Officials warn that this is an immediate threat as the species can rapidly colonize surfaces, clog pipelines, restrict water flows and disrupt natural habitats.

Local leaders are now urging Gov. Gavin Newsom to expand resources and coordination statewide, saying the sea animals are posing serious risks to water conveyance systems, flood control infrastructure, agriculture, recreation and the Delta’s ecosystem.

"We appreciate the state’s partnership, but prevention alone is not enough where this species is already established," Canepa said. "This declaration should serve as a warning across California that we need targeted solutions for the Delta and a serious conversation about mitigation."

On Wednesday, a spokesperson for the governor’s office told Fox News affiliate KTXL-TV that the administration recognizes the urgency facing San Joaquin County and is "focused on deploying every available resource" effectively to combat the invasive species.

"The current challenge requires sustained commitment rather than short-term emergency measures," spokesperson Anthony Martinez said in an emailed statement to KTXL-TV.

"The scale, complexity and regional nature of this threat exceed the capacity of San Joaquin County to effectively respond without additional state and federal support, particularly in safeguarding critical infrastructure and maintaining water supply reliability," the statement continues.

According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, golden mussels, also known as Limnoperna fortunei, were first detected in North America in 2024 and have since spread across California.

Although the species is similar to quagga and zebra mussels, golden mussels can thrive in waters with a wider range of temperatures and salinity levels. This allows them to spread rapidly across various environments.

Officials say the species not only poses a serious risk to the ecosystem, but could also have significant economic impacts, including costly repairs and maintenance of boats, infrastructure and hydroelectric facilities.

The San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors said the local emergency declaration will also help protect boating access, fishing, public infrastructure, farms and freshwater systems throughout the region.

"Golden mussels affect far more than recreational boating," District 1 Supervisor Mario Gardea said. "They threaten agriculture and critical local infrastructure, increase flood risks and could bring major mitigation costs that taxpayers may ultimately bear. That is why we need urgent action and strong regional coordination now."

The youngest in a trio of bald eaglets hatched from a nest at the U.S. Steel Plant just outside Pittsburgh recently had surgery after swallowing a fish hook.

U.S. Steel Irvin in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, has an eagle nest camera that watches Irvin and Stella, a pair of bald eagles, who lay eggs every season and raise their eaglets.

At the end of March, the first of the three eggs hatched, and a short while later, the other two eggs followed.

MICHIGAN OFFICIALS SEEKING INFORMATION ON 5 BALD EAGLES FOUND DEAD IN SAME AREA OVER 2 WEEKS

On April 18, the youngest of the eaglets swallowed a fish hook and a filament line that was inside a fish that one of the eagle parents brought to the babies.

"Some sharp-eyed viewers on the eagle cam caught what happened, and a mobilization effort began to rescue the eaglet," U.S. Steel Media Representative Andrew Fulton said.

Fulton said it was determined that the eaglet was in danger, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was contacted to get permission to remove the eaglet from the nest for treatment.

The eaglet was rescued by tree climbers and whisked away to West Virginia for medical treatment.

Dr. Jesse Fallon, director of Veterinary Medicine at the Avian Conservation Center of Appalachia, was the veterinarian who treated the eaglet.

He said when the eagle was brought in, it was quiet, alert and responsive, which is typical behavior of an eaglet its age.

Fallon said the eaglet was about two weeks old when it was brought in.

He said they did X-rays and an endoscopy, sticking a scope down into the eagle's mouth, in hopes of retrieving the fish hook, but it was too far into the stomach.

So, they did the surgery, which was successful and had a routine closure, Fallon said.

They kept the eaglet for another 10 days, providing it with fluids, antibiotics, pain medicine and doing assisted feedings.

He said eagles of that age are too young to eat independently, so they need some help.

In order to keep the eaglet from imprinting on the humans who were feeding it, the staff at the conservation center used an eagle puppet and kept the eaglet in contact with an adult eagle at all times.

"He got better and better, and stronger," Fallon said.

They kept the eagle in their care until Tuesday, when it was transported back to the nest successfully.

Fallon said the eagle doubled its weight in the 10 days it was at the conservation center.

While the road to recovery is not over, the eaglet seems to be doing well adjusting back to nest life.

May is typically when the Southwest starts to heat up—but sometimes, that heat arrives a little earlier and a little stronger than usual.

Just recently in March, major cities across the West broke temperature records as a massive heat wave gripped the region.

Both Phoenix and Tucson saw record highs above 100 degrees, while Las Vegas set records with temperatures in the upper 90s.

While March brought the heat, May tends to heat up even more as summer approaches—but temperatures at or above 110 degrees in these cities are actually rather rare.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, Las Vegas has never recorded a 110-degree day in the month of May. However, it has come close—back in 2003, temperatures reached 109 degrees near the end of the month.

In Tucson, there have only been two days on record with temperatures at or above 110 degrees, both occurring in 1910.

NOAA's Climate Prediction Center (CPC) has highlighted an area off the southern coast of Mexico for potential tropical development, with a little more than two weeks before the start of hurricane season in the Eastern Pacific.

This comes with the El Niño climate pattern forecast to develop sometime this summer, which is expected to increase the number of named storms in the basin.

The CPC said a tropical system could develop off the coast of Mexico between May 13 and May 19.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, sea surface temperatures are running slightly above average, with some localized regions reaching the upper 80s.

These conditions are already roughly 2 to 3 degrees above average and more than sufficient to support tropical development — typically tropical cyclones form over waters that are above 80 degrees.

While this timing isn't unusual — the first named storm generally forms in the Eastern Pacific around June 10 — the combination of waters already above average and a developing El Niño suggests that this could be the start of a supercharged hurricane season in the basin.

In fact, warm water temperatures in the Pacific greatly enhanced Super Typhoon Sinlaku earlier this month. Sinlaku slammed into the U.S. territory of the Northern Mariana Islands in the Western Pacific with wind speeds approaching 200 mph.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, while El Niño generally suppresses tropical activity in the Atlantic Basin, the warmer sea surface temperatures provide more fuel for tropical storms and hurricanes to develop in the Pacific.

THE COST OF DISASTER: HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HOME AHEAD OF HURRICANE SEASON

In addition, El Niño also generally encourages warm air to rise rapidly in the Eastern Pacific, which creates the clouds and thunderstorms necessary to seed a hurricane or other tropical cyclone.

On average, the Eastern Pacific basin sees 15 named storms, 8 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes (Category 3+). Those averages were significantly higher during El Niño years, which produced: 17 named storms, 9 hurricanes, and 5 major hurricanes.

The Forecast Center noted that while the exact timing of when El Niño develops is important, even moderate El Niño years have above-average tropical activity.

In fact, experts believe this El Niño could significantly outpace the average event. Computer models from both NOAA and Columbia's International Research Institute (IRI) suggest a super El Niño may be on the horizon — which could serve to further supercharge storm activity across the Eastern Pacific.

Officials are looking to combat the spread of a potentially deadly, flesh-eating parasite that is creeping uncomfortably close to the U.S. after being reported about 60 miles from the Texas border, according to a new study.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) study notes that the New World screwworm is about 60 miles away from the Texas border in Nuevo León.

"This is now the northernmost active case in Mexico, and that puts Texas squarely in the crosshairs. The fact that this detection falls within the current sterile fly dispersal zone tells you just how real and active this fight already is," Sid Miller, commissioner of the Texas Department of Agriculture, said.

THIS POTENTIALLY DEADLY, FLESH-EATING PARASITE IS GETTING CLOSER TO THE US

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), New World screwworms are a species of parasitic fly that feeds on the tissue or flesh of warm-blooded animals and people.

They lay their eggs in open wounds and body openings such as the eyes, nose, mouth or genitals.

When the maggots hatch, they burrow and feed on the living tissue or flesh.

After about seven days, the larvae will come out of their host and burrow into the surrounding soil, where they'll eventually emerge as an adult screwworm fly.

"I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: when it comes to protecting our livestock industry, we must go on offense. NEXT STEPS

The USDA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have made strides towards screwworm preparedness by partnering together to break ground on a new sterile fly production facility that will be located in Edinburg, Texas.

"Breaking ground on this facility marks a major investment in safeguarding America’s livestock and the producers who feed this nation. This puts NWS sterile fly production in American hands, so we do not have to rely on other countries for the best offensive measure to push screwworm away from our borders," U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins said.

The Texas Department of Agriculture assured that they are keeping a close eye on any screwworm developments.

"USDA has been working with Mexican authorities to track and respond, and those efforts matter, but this is no time to let up," Miller said.

May severe weather outlook: Pattern shift suggests quieter month after April’s stretch of destructive storms

Looking ahead to May, we typically see a rise in both the coverage and intensity of severe weather. On average, May experiences the highest number of tornadoes, around 278, which is nearly 80 more than April.

However, forecasts indicate that the highly active pattern seen throughout April is likely to weaken this coming month.

BREWING COASTAL STORM MAY SLAM THE NORTHEAST WITH WEEKEND WASHOUT RIGHT BEHIND EVEN MORE HEAVY RAIN

Although severe storms are still likely during May, the prolonged stretches of extreme weather may not be as significant as in recent weeks.

April was a remarkable month for severe storms and heavy rainfall across much of the central United States. In this month alone, there have been more than 260 reported tornadoes, with the highest concentration centered over the Midwest.

Of the 260 reported tornadoes this month, 75 have been confirmed across seven states in just the last week.

In the days that followed, numerous additional tornadoes were confirmed across the Central U.S.

Additionally, over the course of the month, there were four days with a Level 4 out of 5 severe storm risk, including a seven-day stretch with a Level 3 out of 5 risk. This marked the longest span since May 2024, when there were eight consecutive days.

This severe surge was driven by a large-scale pattern featuring a pronounced dip in the jet stream across the West and a ridge over the East, the FOX Forecast Center said.

This setup allowed storms to track from the West into the Plains and then push northward into the Midwest.

A ridge in the jet stream is expected to develop over the West, bringing warmer and somewhat drier conditions. Meanwhile, a dip in the jet stream over the East and Northeast will allow cooler air to settle in.

This change in the broader pattern could result in a quieter month than April. Severe storms are still likely in May, but extended periods of extreme weather may be less pronounced than in recent weeks.

This area of low pressure is expected to develop off the North Carolina coast Friday and begin to move north.

Although the exact track of the system is not currently well-defined, a closer track to the Eastern Seaboard would increase rain and wind impacts across I-95.

Should this developing storm track farther east, rain could miss the coast entirely.

Currently, some rain is forecast to arrive in the New York tri-state area and coastal New England late Saturday.

The "party" pollution refers to drugs entering aquatic ecosystems after human use, where they can affect the fish that inhabit them— a reality now underscored by two recent studies.

Two separate studies examined how drug pollution, including cocaine, affects sharks in the Bahamas and salmon in Sweden. The verdict is in: fish are "hooked," too.

A study published in Current Biology found that Atlantic salmon exposed to cocaine and its main metabolite swam further than their straight edge, cocaine-free counterparts.

The study, conducted in Sweden's Lake Vättern, used 105 tagged juvenile Atlantic salmon that were split into three groups: control (no drug), cocaine-exposed and benzoylecgonine-exposed.

Benzoylecgonine is the primary metabolite of cocaine, and is a common detector for detecting cocaine exposures in drug tests.

The salmon exposed to the benzoylecgonine swam nearly twice as far per week than the clean salmon.

While the drug-free fish became more stationary over time, drug-exposed fish became more erratic, remaining more active and spread out.

Exposed fish moved up to 12.3 km longer than the sober salmon from their release points.

Between the two, benzoylecgonine had more of an impact on the salmon than cocaine did, likely because the effects last longer, and it could have a stronger impact on energy metabolism and brain function, researchers said.

The study is a concrete example of how drug pollution directly impacts wildlife behavior in a natural body of water.

OFF THE DEEP END

Salmon aren't the only swimmers making headlines in relation to illicit drug use – sharks are also off the deep end.

Drug pollution has fish riding the same high humans do – and while the fish are testing positive, the results are quite the opposite.

A 2026 study published in Environmental Pollution titled "Drugs in paradise: caffeine, cocaine, and painkillers detected in sharks from The Bahamas" found that sharks in the waters around Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas are carrying traces of human drugs.

From cocaine to common painkillers, the study found that some sharks in the Bahamas are headed down a bad path – and it's not their fault.

The study tested for drugs that find their way into natural bodies of water thanks to humans through wastewater, runoff and tourism-related pollution.

Researchers sampled 85 sharks across five species and discovered that 28 individuals (about one-third) had detectable levels of at least one of the drugs researched.

"This study did find that the sharks were impacted metabolically. Their metabolisms slow down when breaking down lipids, reproduction rates are likely slowed down and also, they use more energy to detoxify themselves," Environmental Engineer and Scientist Tracy Fanara said. "It is problematic, though we're not going to see sharks going crazy on cocaine."

CAPE COD, Mass.– An ultra-rare American lobster that's body is split equally between orange and blueish-green is making headlines after being discovered off Cape Cod in mid-April.

The lobster, which is just like any lobster you'd have for dinner, was caught by Wellfleet Shellfish Company on the Timothy Michael fishing vessel on April 16.

Understanding how unique this lobster was, Wellfleet Shellfish Company inquired with local aquariums in the area to donate the lobster for onlookers to witness its rarity, too.

They donated the lobster to Woods Hole Science Aquarium in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, which is owned and operated by NOAA Fisheries.

"The donation reflects Wellfleet Shellfish Company’s longstanding commitment to sustainability, stewardship and supporting the region’s marine science community," Wellfleet Shellfish Company said.

"We were really, really excited," Katie Dever, the lead biologist at Woods Hole Science Aquarium said. "She's beautiful, and we're thrilled that we can be able to showcase her."

"While most lobsters do come out looking that green-brown color typical of New England waters because it helps them camouflage, sometimes they come out as these kind of genetic abnormalities," Dever said. "And they look quite beautiful, like the lobster we got."

Woods Hole Science Aquarium is currently undergoing renovations, so the lobster is being held at the Marine Biological Laboratory, which partners with Woods Hole Science Aquarium and NOAA Fisheries, and where she is undergoing a quarantine period to ensure she doesn't carry any diseases, parasites or illnesses that could be passed to other animals at the aquarium.

Dever said the lobster is a bicolor or a split lobster, meaning she shows two different coloration on her shell.

She explained that this mutation happens when two eggs come into contact with one another and absorb each other while developing.

"The split coloration is about one in 50 million," Dever said.

She said other types of rare lobsters include blue lobsters, calico lobsters and extremely rare albino lobsters, which occur one in about 100 million lobsters.

The lobster is doing really well at the Marine Biological Laboratory. She's settling in, eating and they're getting to know her personality.

"Her favorite food right now is live blue mussels," Dever said.

The lobster is not the first bicolored lobster that Woods Hole Science Aquarium has ever had, but it's the first one since Dever has worked there.

She said lobsters are very territorial animals, so this is the aquarium's only lobster.

"We try to keep our lobster numbers down, so we can make sure that they're living in a tank where they're comfortable, they have enough room and they're not fighting with their tank mates," Dever said.

Lobsters are easily stressed, which is why the aquarium is going through such lengths to make sure she's healthy and comfortable.

Currently, the lobster is 3.15 pounds, and they estimate she's between 10 and 20 years old, but determining the age of lobsters is difficult because they show very little indication of their age since they molt their shells, Dever said.

Dever said it's remarkable that the lobster is as large and old as she is because of her coloring.

"A lot of times these lobsters don't live very long because they stand out so much that it's very easy for predators to identify them," Dever said.

Woods Hole Science Aquarium is the oldest aquarium in America, dating back to the 1870s, Dever said.

The aquarium hopes to reopen to the public after its renovations in early 2027.

At their full capacity, they have around 100 different species.

"It's a wide variety of animals, but they're all local to our region," Dever said. " So when you come here, you're not seeing animals from the Bahamas or from Japan. You're seeing the life that is here in Woods Hole."

In addition to showing some of the cool animals of New England, the aquarium aims to provide education on NOAA Fisheries and local seafood.

Many of their animals were re-homed or released back into the ocean while undergoing their renovations.

Dever said once the seawater is back on at the aquarium, their staff will go back out to the ocean to collect different species.

The lobster is set to be named in the coming weeks, and she will remain in quarantine for anywhere between 30 and 90 days so scientists and veterinarians can monitor her condition.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – An active great white shark off the coast of one of California's most popular beaches has resulted in a 48-hour closure of a strip of the Pacific Ocean.

Huntington Beach, popularly known as "Surf City USA," has long attracted locals and visitors with its celebrated beaches and consistent surf, though sharks—while rarely dangerous—are a regular presence in these waters.

On Wednesday morning, lifeguards observed a 9 to 10-foot great white shark actively feeding on a dead sea lion in the surf line at Sunset Beach, city officials said.

The shark was exhibiting aggressive behavior near the shore – forcing city officials to take action.

"For public safety, the water is closed for 48 hours within one mile in each direction at North Pacific Avenue and 12th Street (Sunset Beach Tower 12)," the City of Huntington Beach said.

While the presence of a large great white shark alone is enough to have swimmers, surfers and lifeguards concerned – the risk increases when the apex predator is actively feeding on a large food source like a sea lion.

This temporary closure comes just after a popular Huntington Beach surf competition was put on hold due to the same threat: a massive great white shark.

On April 23, the Vans Jack’s Surfboards Pro was scheduled to have professional surfers trading waves next to Huntington's trademark pier, but an estimated 10-foot great white shark had other plans.

While the shark that delayed the surf competition and the one spotted Wednesday were each estimated at around 10 feet in length, it is unclear whether they were the same animal, but they both fall within the juvenile range.

Great white sharks are typically born at 4 to 5-feet-long and grow gradually, reaching roughly 10 feet during adolescence, while fully mature adults can exceed 20 feet and rank among the ocean’s apex predators.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Visitors at a popular Los Angeles park are being urged to avoid the squirrels after a wildlife alert was posted along its trails.

THIS POTENTIALLY DEADLY, FLESH-EATING PARASITE IS GETTING CLOSER TO THE US

A notice was posted at Runyon Canyon Park in the Hollywood Hills, cautioning hikers about "sick, lethargic and deceased squirrels" that have recently been observed in and around the area.

The warning signs were placed along several popular hiking trails and also shared in a community Facebook group, Friends of Runyon Canyon.

The alert warned park-goers to look out for squirrels that appear lethargic or unsteady, show erratic or disoriented behavior or are found dead on or near the trails.

RESIDENTS HAVE BEEN ADVISED TO CONTACT PARK RANGERS IF THEY SPOT ANY SICK OR DEAD SQUIRRELS.

To protect visitors, the notice advises the public to avoid touching any affected animals, keep pets on a leash and away from wildlife, avoid feeding squirrels and to wash hands after visiting the park.

Residents have been advised to contact park rangers if they spot any sick or dead squirrels.

Users of the Friends of Runyon Canyon Facebook group were shocked and concerned when they saw the alert.

In response to a video about the warning that was shared in the group, one user commented, "bubonic plague?"

The City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks told FOX Weather that they have not issued or posted any official health alert regarding squirrels in Runyon Canyon Park.

WHITE SETTLEMENT, Texas – A mother and three children found themselves in a life-or-death situation amid a dangerous downpour in Texas over the weekend after their car was swept into raging floodwaters.

The jaw-dropping rescue, caught on camera by heroic officers from the White Settlement Police Department, captured officers' arrival at the critical scene and the unconventional lifesaving efforts that allowed the family to safely walk away.

After intense severe storms brought heavy rain to the North Central Texas area on April 25, a typically tame drainage creek between Western Hills Boulevard in White Settlement transitioned into a ferocious river – rushing with a deadly intent.

When a family – a mother and three children – found the front of their car swept into the dangerous floodwater, first responders had to act swiftly to secure the vehicle.

After the car became stuck on a dangerous ledge between the floodwaters and the road, the three children were able to exit safely—but their mother remained trapped in the path of the rushing water.

While the three children stood safely on the roadside, soaked and shaken beside the raging water, their mother remained in danger—trapped in the floodwaters, clinging to the driver’s door.

Much-needed rain is finally reaching parts of the Deep South and Southeast as multiple storm systems push through. This moisture is critical as much of the Southern U.S. is experiencing drought conditions ranging from abnormally dry to extreme and exceptional, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

However, a fast-moving cluster of storms has heightened flash flood risks and is bringing severe weather threats, primarily large hail and damaging winds, to the region.

Ahead of the building flash flood threat, the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has increased the severe storm threat level to a 3 out of 5 for Wednesday.

Currently, 100% of Arkansas is in a drought, with over 90% of the state classified as severe to exceptional.

Year-to-date, Little Rock is facing a deficit of nearly 8 inches, marking one of its driest starts to a year on record, the FOX Forecast Center said.

Through the weekend, a widespread 2 to 3 inches of rain is expected from Texas through Georgia.

Within this zone, a large swath of 3 to 5 inches is forecast from central Texas through Alabama, with localized amounts possibly exceeding 5 inches.

Due to heavier rainfall rates and the potential for trailing storms over the same areas, the risk of flash flooding will increase into the latter part of the week.

On Thursday, a Level 2 out of 4 flash flood risk is in place across central Texas, expanding on Friday to include areas from eastern Texas through Alabama.

This threat spans more than 1,000 miles and impacts nearly 10 states.

That said, additional severe storms are likely each day as the flash flood threat ramps up, but overall the storms will not pose the same threats compared to the past week of severe storms, according to the FOX Forecast Center.

State of disaster, curfew declared after EF-3 tornado tears through Texas city and leaves path of destruction

MINERAL WELLS, Texas – On the tail end of a relentless severe weather marathon, a destructive tornado tore through the town of Mineral Wells in north Texas, leaving a trail of significant structural damage and reported injuries Tuesday evening, officials said.

Overnight, officials declared a local state of disaster as first responders continued to assist those affected, assess the damage and secure impacted areas to ensure public safety.

The city implemented a curfew for areas with extensive damage until 6 a.m. Wednesday, followed by a nightly 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew until further notice.

In a news conference on Wednesday, Mineral Wells Fire Chief Ryan Dunn said there is a lot of damage and debris spread across Country Club Estates, with collapsed buildings and roofs off of homes.

The National Weather Service Fort Worth office confirmed the tornado was an EF-3 that packed estimated winds of 145 mph. Surveying is still ongoing, and this rating could change as this is a preliminary rating.

The town asked for people to stay off the roads while damage surveys are conducted.

"A lot of this area is still not safe. We do not need or want extra traffic through here until we let our utility companies get in and get everything under control, do their assessments and make sure that the area is cleared.," said Mineral Wells Mayor Regan Johnson. "Then we can move on to, debris and chainsaws and recovery efforts and those kind of things"

Dunn said on Wednesday that five people were injured and taken to the hospital. He said several others were treated on scene and didn't go to the hospital.

ALABAMA AND SOUTHERN US MARK 15 YEARS SINCE THE SUPER TORNADO OUTBREAK OF 2011

Located just outside the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex, the tornado ripped through Mineral Wells, destroying buildings and scattering debris across roads and parking lots, in addition to causing injuries.

On Tuesday, the NWS issued a Tornado Warning for Southern Parker County at 5:11 p.m. CDT, warning of a confirmed, radar-indicated tornado that impacted Mineral Wells, among other areas.

At 5:10 p.m. CDT, a confirmed tornado was located along Highway 180 just west of Cool, Texas, roughly three miles east of Mineral Wells, moving towards the city at 25 mph, the warning said.

Mayor Johnson said the recovery efforts will be long-term for the town.
