This week, we celebrated 50 years since the first investment of the European Investment Bank in Portugal, and 40 years since the accession of the country to the European Union, with a loud and clear message: Portugal is a great success story, and the European Investment Bank will continue to invest in projects that make a difference, supporting economic growth and social progress. Projects like those announced this week: to build housing, to reconstruct after the floods, to support small and medium-sized companies or expand the metro of Lisbon.
It was a great pleasure to meet President Seguro and discuss our shared priorities, and also to welcome the contribution of Portugal to the European Tech Champions Initiative, to scale up Europe's innovators into global leaders.
At the EU-Canada Summit in Montreal, we signed the framework agreement to start operations in the country, beginning with projects in the area of critical minerals.
This week, we also launched an ambitious partnership with Deutsche Bank to power Europe's space sector and announced new financing for district heating and energy efficiency at airports, sustainable urban development, small businesses, water technology and innovation. And outside Europe, new financing for solar and onshore wind parks in Egypt.
Unfortunately, we finish the week mourning the victims of the terrible train accident in Spain. Our thoughts and our hearts are with them and their families.
