Avoid BHHT Deals as a seller! Not Trustworthy!
Purchased an Amazon Renewed/Amazon Guaranteed refurbished phone advertised as "Screen: no scratches. Body: light scratches, barely visible" The phone arrived with a deep gouge and spider-webbing crack on the screen that was not only very visible but also deep enough to feel it. I initiated return within 5 minutes of it being delivered to my house. It took 4 days for the seller to provide me with a return label, and the label was not prepaid. Now I am out $26 to pay to ship their broken phone back to them. Unacceptable in every way! Avoid this seller. Not trustworthy!

DEC. 2025 UPDATE: Phone is BRICKED, SIM card not recognized after Nov. UI8 software update. A quick Google search reveals others who bought this refurb from Amazon now also have non-functional phones.

DETAILS: The phone's About screen shows the model name as SM-A536U1/DS, a dual SIM unlocked phone. HOWEVER, when you check the IMEI, it reports the model name as SM-A536U, a SINGLE SIM phone, locked to Spectrum Mobile. Apparently, the mismatched model results in the SIM card not found issue, and it seemingly can't be fixed by a hard reset or anything else according to many reports. Not surprisingly, it seems the firmware for these two models is not identical; the fact that the firmware used when the phone was "refurbished" doesn't match the hardware has resulted in an expensive paperweight. This incorrect firmware was a mistake ... at best.

I've contacted Amazon's customer support, and they're "escalating" the issue. It's clearly not a warranty issue as we bought this 18 months ago. But it IS an issue with the phone being reported (as evidenced by the model name on the About screen) as something it wasn't.

REFURBISHED: I've ALWAYS trusted Amazon's refurbished products. Not sure about that now. I will return and update this review if "escalating" the concern results in anything positive.

SIDE NOTE: Other A53s, bought directly from the manufacturer, are fine. And this refurbished A53 HAS received numerous software updates before the UI8 upgrade with no problem.

      ------------------------------------------

We have multiples of this phone in our family, and we like it a lot. This RENEWED version was like new as far as the phone itself goes. The packaging was a bit rough, but not a deal breaker at all. (It was a gift; would have preferred nicer packaging. But it was as described!)

As others have said, the downsides of this phone are: 1) Its size. Like most phones today, it's big. If you have smaller hands, or just prefer a smaller device, this probably isn't for you. 2) It's pretty heavy. Thanks to its big battery, you won't throw it your pants pocket (or tiny purse) and not notice. Of course that big battery lasts a long time, and that's an important factor to us. Worth the weight.

In addition to long battery life, we love length of OS and security updates. This is one of the phones that Samsung has committed to updates way beyond when similar age phones stop receiving them. Again, very important for us.

One star is not a low enough rating for this item. Reception is horrendous. I get busy signals practically every time I attempt voice calls. Sending text messages invariably fails. Switching airplane mode off, then on, does not work. Even when the phone shows 5 bars I must exit the building...ANY building I am in...restart the phone, re-place my call or resend the text and pray it will actually go through. The problems seem to have coincided with the switch-over to 5G in larger cities. At that time, service in my rural community was upgraded from 3G to 4G. My spouse's iPhone gets consistently great reception in our home and anywhere we travel. I have exhausted no less than three tech support professionals at my phone carrier who attempted to solve the issue by searching every nook & cranny for incorrect settings, doing network resets and finally sending me a new SIM card...none of which solved the problems. I have suffered with this piece of junk for18 months, wishing & hoping things would improve. And yes, that's the definition of insanity. Time to cut my losses and purchase a real phone. It will not be a refurb. And I will never-ever purchase from Cell Traitors again.

First of all, let me say that I virtually never write reviews. But, this crummy phone is an exception.

I usually buy a cheaper phone to do the job. My phone is a tool. I use it as a level, to sell stuff on Marketplace, photos of part placement on whatever I am working on to remember reassembly, etc. I am an older person and utility is everything. So, at the recommendation of my kids "Dad, buy a better phone", I bought this Galaxy A 53.

The screen is really great. The fingerprint reader is very good. Face recognition not so good. But, please read the following to see my real complaint:

The phone glitches. That is the only way I can think of to describe. Often you have to tap an AP icon several times or at a certain angle to open. Awful an frustrating. Then there is the voice to text feature which is terrible and very, very slow as though the phone is trying to interpret how to translate. Worst phone like this I have ever owned, an I buy cheap phones! The scroll in the text is also slow and the recommended words the scroll recommends are no like the word you are trying to spell. Really, really bad.

So, I went back to my old standby and bought a Moto G Stylus 5G 2022. I did the same things to compare on receiving the phone. It is simply excellent at all the items that I just complained about on the Galaxy. I don't care about the "super good screen". Irrelevant. I am not watching movies or making a video presentation.

Don't buy this phone, it will irritate you every time you tap an AP and it doesn't open.
