2$\begingroup$ I would add that it doesn't need to be an independent journalist. The regime also needs official journalists, propaganda doesn't write itself. $\endgroup$LazyLizard– LazyLizard2025-12-30 11:50:21 +00:00Commented yesterday

$\begingroup$ A literary example of official journalists in an authoritarian government would be in Orwell's '1984' with 24/7 'news' being delivered by the telescreens. $\endgroup$Michael Richardson– Michael Richardson2025-12-30 16:15:02 +00:00Commented yesterday

$\begingroup$ @LazyLizard You're point's well taken, but the OP specifically asked about "a journalist trying to investigate all of this." Such is not a member of the proverbial Ministry of Propaganda. Even today, independent investigative journalists are often seen by corporations and government as a despicable irritant to be discredited and avoided. $\endgroup$JBH– JBH2025-12-30 17:07:04 +00:00Commented yesterday

$\begingroup$ Even though I voted to close this, it feels good that you answered a question that I thought wouldn't be answerable. $\endgroup$Robert Rapplean– Robert Rapplean2025-12-30 17:55:37 +00:00Commented yesterday

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. science-based), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
