Sep 15, 2018 at 6:52 comment added a4android @RonJohn Quite right. The premise here is that they didn't want their city-smashing bombs to be identified as nuclear. While not possible in our world IMHO, it is interesting to work out the different steps necessary to do so.
Sep 15, 2018 at 6:49 comment added a4android To be pedantic, the nuclear mechanism of the atom bomb, which was basic physics was understood before WW2 began. The real problem was making nuclear weapons that could work. The atom bombing of Hiroshima & Nagasaki announced to the world nuclear weapons worked. Any nation with the scientific & industrial capacity could work out how to make their bombs work & how to manufacture them. Soviet spies accelerated that process for the USSR.

Sep 14, 2018 at 17:01 comment added Michael Seifert It's worth reading over the reactions of captured German physicists to the news of the bombing of Hiroshima. Their reactions are all along the lines of "we knew this was possible with enough manpower, but we're surprised that the Americans actually managed to accomplish it."
