I agree with this answer totally. Even if he uses emacs for programming and compiles everything manually directly, it should still be ok as long as the code looks like all the rest after being reviewed and pushed.

They shouldnt have to log into his machine, but they had to. I would try to avoid the need that anyone has to log into my machine, but OP’s colleague didn’t.
