CNBC's business TV news channel in Europe made its debut Monday with 11 charter advertisers. They will spend a combined $800,000 over the next four to six weeks, according to industry estimates. CNBC programming will also continue to run on NBC Superchannel for the foreseeable future, executives say.
The new 24-hour service reaches 7.2 million homes while NBC Superchannel's reach is 50.4 million cable and satellite homes in Europe.
The charter advertisers for the new CNBC Europe service are Union Bank of Switzerland, global courier DHL, Ericsson, Philips, Swissair, Delta Air Lines, Peugeot, Merrill Lynch, the Financial Times, the International Herald Tribune and NBC's parent, General Electric.
CNBC launches in Europe 12 months after European Business News (EBN) launched as Europe's first 24-hour business news channel. EBN is partially owned by Dow Jones, publisher of The Wall Street Journal.
The CNBC service reaches homes and cable networks in the U.K., Ireland, Norway and Sweden. In addition, CNBC will form part of a digital platform being launched by Nethold in September covering Scandinavia, the Benelux and Central Europe.
