$The Pillars of Creation are set off in a kaleidoscope of colour in the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope's near-infrared-light view. The pillars look like arches and spires rising out of a desert landscape, but are filled with semi-transparent gas and dust, and ever changing. This is a region where young stars are forming -- or have barely burst from their dusty cocoons as they continue to form. Protostars are the scene-stealers in this Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) image. These are the bright red orbs that sometimes appear with eight diffraction spikes. When knots with sufficient mass form within the pillars, they begin to collapse under their own gravity, slowly heat up, and eventually begin shining brightly. Along the edges of the pillars are wavy lines that look like lava. These are ejections from stars that are still forming. Young stars periodically shoot out jets that can interact within clouds of material, like these thick pillars of gas and dust. This sometimes also results in bow shocks, which can form wavy patterns like a boat does as it moves through water. These young stars are estimated to be only a few hundred thousand years old, and will continue to form for millions of years. Although it may appear that near-infrared light has allowed Webb to "pierce through" the background to reveal great cosmic distances beyond the pillars, the interstellar medium stands in the way, like a drawn curtain. This is also the reason why there are no distant galaxies in this view. This translucent layer of gas blocks our view of the deeper universe. Plus, dust is lit up by the collective light from the packed "party" of stars that have burst free from the pillars. It's like standing in a well-lit room looking out a window -- the interior light reflects on the pane, obscuring the scene outside and, in turn, illuminating the activity at the party inside. Webb's new view of the Pillars of Creation will help researchers revamp models of star formation.$

Space rock slams into Mars, forming a crater that revealed chunks of ice

Six new species of rain frogs were discovered on the eastern slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes, from the Llanganates and Sangay National Parks in Ecuador, according to a statement from Ecuador's Ministry of the Environment, Water, and Ecological transition.

"Jhael Ortega, Jorge Brito, and Santiago Ron, researchers from the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador and the National Institute of Biodiversity (INABIO), an entity attached to the Ministry of the Environment, Water and Ecological Transition, discovered six new species of rain frogs of the genus Pristimantis (Strabomantidae) from the eastern slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes, from the Llanganates and Sangay National Parks," the ministry wrote.

Within Ecuador, the Amazonian Montane Forests are the region with the highest species richness and where most Pristimantis (very large genus of frogs) have been discovered in recent years, according to the ministry.

Professor Santiago Ron wrote on his Twitter account that they decided to name one of the frogs "resistance" to dedicate it to the environmental defenders who have been murdered in Latin America.

The ministry statement also said that "due to the lack of information on the status of the populations or their existence in other locations, the researchers recommend assigning these new species to the Red List Data Deficient (DD) category." The IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria are intended to be an easily and widely understood system for classifying species at high risk of global extinction.

According to the study where it was published on PeerJ, "With more than 569 species distributed from eastern Honduras and Panama through the Andes to Bolivia, north Argentina, and Brazil, Pristimantis is the most speciose genus among land-living vertebrates on developers (terrestrial eggs and no tadpole), they do not depend on water bodies for their reproduction."

The first Webb images got a psychedelic, X-ray vision makeover

Researchers traced light that was emitted by the bright white elliptical galaxy on the left through the spiral galaxy at right. As a result, they were able to identify the effects of interstellar dust in the spiral galaxy. Webb's near-infrared data also shows us the galaxy's longer, extremely dusty spiral arms in far more detail, giving them an appearance of overlapping with the central bulge of the bright white elliptical galaxy on the left, though the pair are not interacting. In this image, green, yellow, and red were assigned to Webb's near-infrared data taken in 0.9, 1.5, and 3.56 microns (F090W, F150W, and F356W respectively). Blue was assigned to two Hubble filters, ultraviolet data taken in 0.34 microns (F336W) and visible light in 0.61 microns (F606W). Read the full description and download the image files. Webb, Hubble space telescopes capture an intriguing galactic pair

Astronomers using the NSF's NOIRLab's SOAR telescope in Chile captured the vast plume of dust and debris blasted from the surface of the asteroid Dimorphos by NASA's DART spacecraft when it impacted on 26 September 2022. In this image, the more than 10,000 kilometer long dust trail — the ejecta that has been pushed away by the Sun's radiation pressure, not unlike the tail of a comet — can be seen stretching from the center to the right-hand edge of the field of view.

$This image from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) instrument shows Dimorphos, the asteroid moonlet in the double-asteroid system of Didymos, about 4 hours after NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) made impact. A tight, compact core and plumes of material appearing as wisps streaming away from the center of where the impact took place, are visible in the image. Those sharp points are Webb's distinctive eight diffraction spikes, an artifact of the telescope's structure. These observations, when combined with data from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, will allow scientists to gain knowledge about the nature of the surface of Dimorphos, how much material was ejected by the collision, and how fast it was ejected. In the coming months, scientists will use Webb's Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) and Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) to observe Dimorphos further. Spectroscopic data will also provide researchers with insight into the asteroid's chemical composition. The observations shown here were conducted in the filter F070W (0.7 microns) and assigned the color red. NIRCam was built by a team at the University of Arizona and Lockheed Martin's Advanced Technology Center.$
