College students are at a crossroads.  This situation means that one of the basic building blocks to the future, credit, can be hard to find. Banks want loyal customers for life, but they don’t want to give credit to folks that can’t pay it back.

Enter the student credit card. With smaller credit limits and rewards tailored to those in college, student credit cards can provide a bridge to more valuable credit offers in the future. Note that the Credit CARD Act of 2009 stipulates that credit cards cannot be issued to anyone under 21 unless a parent or guardian cosigns for them or they have independent income.

Methodology

To identify the best student credit cards, we first gathered data on those cards designed for college students. The editorial team then analyzed the cards,  focusing on factors such as annual percentage rate, fees, and rewards. We favored cards with no annual fee, a reasonable APR, and student-friendly rewards.

Best Student Credit Cards

Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card for Students *
[ jump to details ]

Bank of America’s Travel Rewards card for students tops our rankings due to its combination of no annual fee, easy to earn rewards and a solid welcome bonus.

Rewards: Earn 1.5 points per dollar on all purchases

Welcome Offer: 25,000 bonus points if you make at least $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days of your account opening - which can be redeemed for a $250 statement credit toward travel purchases

Annual Fee: $0

Other Benefits and Drawbacks: Bank of America Travel Rewards are easy to use: Points are worth 1 cent each towards statement credit to pay for flights, hotels, vacation packages, cruises, rental cars or baggage fees. The card also has no foreign transaction fee, which is handy if you plan to study abroad or go on an international spring break.

Discover it® Student Cash Back
[ jump to details ]

The Discover it Student offers 5% cash back up to $1,500 on selected quarterly categories when activated, and 1% cash back on all other purchases. Add that to a cashback match welcome bonus and you’ve got a winner.

Rewards: Earn 5% cash back on a selection of quarterly rotating categories up to $1,500 when activated, and 1% cash back on all other purchases.

Welcome Offer: Intro Offer: Unlimited Cashback Match - only from Discover. Discover will automatically match all the cash back you've earned at the end of your first year! So you could turn $50 cash back into $100. Or turn $100 into $200. There's no minimum spending or maximum rewards. Just a dollar-for-dollar match.

Annual Fee: $0

Other Benefits and Drawbacks: Discover is not as widely accepted as Mastercard, Visa or American Express overseas, which could be a drawback for students who travel. The quarterly bonus categories may or may not fit how you spend, meaning you might not maximize your earning potential every single quarter. Discover gives a $20 statement credit each school year your GPA is 3.0 or higher for up to 5 years after becoming a cardholder.

Bank of America® Cash Rewards Credit Card for Students *
[ jump to details ]

The Bank of America Cash Rewards card offers you the ability to earn 3% cash back in a category you choose and can change monthly. While that’s a win, the 2% cash back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs may prove more lucrative in the long run.

Rewards: Earn 3% cash back in the eligible category of your choice, 2% cash back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs (up to combined $2,500 per quarter) and 1% cash back on all other purchases.

Welcome Offer: Online $200 cash rewards bonus after making at least $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days of your account opening

Annual Fee: $0

Other Benefits and Drawbacks: The 3% cash back categories you can choose between include: gas, online shopping, dining, travel, drug stores and home improvement/furnishings. You can change categories monthly, but it takes effort to do so.

Cash is king as far as rewards go, but if you anticipate redeeming any of your rewards for travel you’ll do better with theBank of America Travel Rewards student card.

Discover it® Student chrome
[ jump to details ]

If you don’t like wondering what your bonus categories are going to be or needing to activate them, the Discover it Student chrome offers a consistent category bonus on items you’ll buy often. Even better, it offers a welcome bonus in the form of matching your cash back earnings at the end of your first year as a cardholder.

Rewards: Earn 2% cash back at Gas Stations and Restaurants on up to $1,000 in combined purchases each quarter. Plus, earn unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases – automatically.

Other Benefits and Drawbacks: The Discover it Student chrome has the benefit of consistent rewards categories, but the Discover it Student Cash Back will likely be more lucrative for most students due to the ability to earn higher rewards on some spending. Discover gives a $20 statement credit each school year if your GPA is 3.0 or higher, for up to 5 years, but the card is not as widely accepted as Visa or Mastercard overseas.

Chase Freedom® Student credit card
[ jump to details ]

The Chase Freedom family of cards ranks among Forbes Advisor’s favorites, but the student version is lackluster in comparison. The paltry welcome bonus combined with an earnings rate lower than its competitors keep it from the top of our list.

Rewards: Earn 1% cash back on all purchases.

Welcome Offer: $50 Bonus after first purchase made within the first 3 months from account opening

Annual Fee: $0

Other Benefits and Drawbacks: The main draw of the Chase Freedom student is simplicity. With a flat rewards rate and no annual fee, it’s an easy entry into the Chase ecosystem. Chase does offer $20 per year for keeping the account in good standing for up to your first five years as a cardholder and a credit line increase after five on-time payments in ten months for qualified cardholders.

Deserve® EDU Mastercard for Students
[ jump to details ]

Besides being dubbed by Deserve itself as the best credit card for international students, this card offers benefits for American students, too. The Deserve® EDU Mastercard for Students does not require a social security number, credit history or a cosigner. Since it is not a secured credit card, there’s also no need to provide a deposit. The Deserve EDU Mastercard has no annual fee or foreign transaction fees.

Rewards: Earn 1% cash back on all purchases

Welcome Offer: N/A

Annual Fee: $0

Other Benefits and Drawbacks: Through Mastercard Platinum, Deserve EDU Mastercard offers an extended warranty, purchase insurance up to $10,000, price protection, travel assistance services, cell phone protection and roadside assistance. As a bonus, those that spend $500 in the first 3 months of account opening can get reimbursed up to a life-time total of $59 for an Amazon Prime Student subscription.

How to Pick a Student Credit Card

Finding the best credit card for your needs can be overwhelming, especially if you’re new to the world of credit. Before applying, consider your options. Here are some questions to ask:

  • Are you ready for a credit card? You can damage your credit by getting a credit card that you spend up to its limit or that you don’t pay on time. If you’re not sure you trust yourself not to run up a bill you can’t pay, you might do better with a secured credit card. A secured card gives you skin in the game when it comes to repayment because you have to put up cash in order to secure a credit limit.
  • Are you trying to maximize earnings or do you value simplicity? If you don’t want to wonder which category is getting bonus points this quarter, a flat rate card is better for you.
  • Some cards offer generous welcome bonuses but are not the best for actual category bonuses. Are you looking for a rewards kick-start or a generous ongoing rewards program?

Frequently Asked Questions

How To Get A Credit Card As A Student?

For most students, getting a credit card can be a challenge. That’s partly due to the passage of the CARD Act of 2009, which prohibited issuers from approving credit card applications from anyone under 21 without a parent or guardian cosigner or proof that the applicant has enough independent income to make the minimum monthly required payment amount on the maximum amount of credit issued.

Most young adults also haven’t had a chance to build up enough a credit profile to qualify for many cards, which means the best option for a first credit card to build credit is to apply for either a credit card for fair credit or a secured card, which requires a refundable security deposit.

There are a handful of cards available that don’t require credit checks and/or a deposit but these typically come with higher-than-average APRs, annual fees and other fees that are best avoided like account opening fees or fees for requesting a higher credit limit.

What Makes College Student Credit Cards Different From Regular Credit Cards?

College student credit cards aren’t actually different from other credit cards, they’re just marketed towards college students who may otherwise have a challenging time being approved for a credit card.

A college student credit card, which is a first credit card for many, will typically have more forgiving underwriting standards than a card designed for those with good credit. This means you will qualify with a lower credit score than the standard version of the card would require. Some college credit cards even offer some perks just for students, like the Discover it® Student Cash Back which offers a $20 statement credit each school year if your GPA is 3.0 or higher for up to five years.

Is It Easy To Get A Student Credit Card?

That depends on both the card you’re applying for and your credit history. Even though many student credit cards are aimed at those with little or no credit, there’s a difference between a lack of credit history and a bad credit history.

If you have made some missteps, you may not qualify for the student card you want. In that case, work on building your credit profile with a secured card that reports to all three of the major credit bureaus. Once you improve your score, it will be easier to get an unsecured credit card.

How Old Do I Have To Be To Get A Student Credit Card?

Most issuers require an applicant to be at least 18 years of age to apply for a credit card in their own name. The provisions of the CARD Act of 2009 state that anyone under 21 can only open a credit card account with either a cosigner or proof that they earn enough independent income to meet minimum monthly payments on the maximum amount of their credit line.

Do I Need A Job To Get A Student Credit Card?

If you’re between 18 and 21, you either have to earn enough income independently to make the minimum monthly payments on the maximum amount you can charge on the card or you have to have a cosigner to get a credit card.

What Should I Do If I Can't Get A Student Credit Card?

If you can’t get a student credit card, consider a secured card, which gives you a line of credit in exchange for a refundable security deposit. Ideally, you’ll get a secured card that reports to all three credit reporting agencies so you can work on building a strong credit profile and eventually graduate to an unsecured card.

Can International Students Apply For A Credit Card?

International students may not qualify for many types of credit cards as they likely won’t have any credit history in the U.S. In that scenario, applying for a secured card is a great first step towards building up a strong credit profile.

A secured card gives you a line of credit in exchange for a refundable security deposit and with regular on-time payments can show a successful track record of responsible payment behavior. The Deserve® EDU Mastercard for Students is one of the few that doesn’t require a social security number for international students.

Can Student Credit Cards Improve Or Build Credit?

Any credit card—student or otherwise—can help you improve or build your credit history with responsible usage like regular on-time payments and low credit utilization. Working toward a strong credit profile is a smart money move that can save you hundreds, even thousands on other types of loans, including student loans, card loans and mortgages later in life.
