How to Choose a Student Checking Account

While there are several options on our list of the best student checking accounts, you may still find yourself trying to evaluate which account is right for you. Here are a few points to help you get started:

  • ATM network. If you are a consumer who frequently visits an ATM, having an extensive ATM network will be highly beneficial. The more ATMs in your bank’s network that you can use without incurring fees, the better off you are.
  • Customer service availability. As our banking habits have largely changed over the past few years to a more digital-centric environment, having readily available customer service is essential. Whether through digital chat options or over the phone, evaluating a bank’s customer service capabilities should be an important factor in which student checking account you choose.
  • Mobile app and online usability. Digital banking is now a central part of how many consumers interact with their personal finances. And for students with on-the-go lives, a usable digital app and website will be an integral part of their banking experience.
  • Minimum opening requirement. Many of the banks on this list have either no minimum opening requirement or a modest opening requirement. For many students on strict budgets, this factor may prove to be the difference.
  • Paper check-writing capability. Because so many bank account transactions are done online or via mobile, not all checking accounts offer the ability to write a paper check. If you will occasionally, or frequently, need or want to write actual checks, consider whether the account offers them.

Also, consider that once you are no longer a student, or in some cases your age exceeds the maximum listed on the account, your account may be closed or transitioned to a standard checking account. So, while you may be a student now, consider each bank more closely to see if you can picture a long-term relationship with them post-graduation.

Lastly, but most importantly, be sure to consider your needs as a banking customer. While your needs may be simple as a college student, consider what you need from a bank account before selecting one. For example, if you visit ATMs frequently, consider any ATM fees that may apply.

Methodology

To create this list, Forbes Advisor analyzed 29 accounts at 24 financial institutions, including a mix of online banks, brick-and-mortar banks and credit unions, focusing on college-aged students. We ranked each account on data points within the categories of product offerings, fees, APY, minimum requirements, customer experience, digital banking experience, ATM network and availability.

Here’s the weighting assigned to each category:

  • Monthly fee: 20%
  • ATM network: 15%
  • ATM fees: 10%
  • Customer experience: 10%
  • Digital experience: 10%
  • Minimum deposit to open: 10%
  • Ongoing balance requirement: 10%
  • Non-sufficient funds fee: 5%
  • Overdraft fee: 5%
  • Availability: 5%

Student checking account options offering low fees moved to the top of our list, as did accounts with broad ATM networks and strong customer and digital experience scores. While not all 10 accounts are student-specific, they offer features and fee structures that can benefit students.
