Extended Mid-Credits Scene: Deadpool Tries To Kill Baby Hitler

In addition to the changes to the previous Deadpool 2 mid-credits scenes, there are two additional scenes that have been the topic of much discussion; they were first rumored in the week leading up to release and screened to Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con. Now, they're fully available to the public - and there's more than people expected.

The first scene will be familiar to many. Taking place right after the Green Lantern script shoot, it sees Wade explore the eternal time travel question and try and kill baby Hitler, averting all the horrors he wrought. He travels back to am 1889 nursery but struggles with the morally tricky task. Eventually building himself up, he leans in to smother Hitler while bolstering himself saying "maximum effort".

It's a dark scene, especially after the more jovial sequence prior, so it's understandable for this to be cut for the theatrical release. That said, that difficulty it is kind of the point; that debate and the question of change (something Deadpool 2's time travel rules leave open to debate) are a fundamental time travel dilemma. And, suitably, the answer isn't as clear-cut as it seems...

While the smothering is the end of the main mid-credits scene, Deadpool 2: The Super Duper Cut has one more surprise in store at the very end. This reveals that Deadpool couldn't actually bring himself to kill Hitler, instead playing with the baby before relaizing little Adolf needs changing. Wade changes Hitler's diaper, remarking "That’s why you’re such a little bastard, no one’s ever changed you!" The stinger ends on a slightly more morbid note, with Wade saying he'll go get Cable to finish the job, adding "He has a real way with kids".

Tucked away at the end it may be, this takes off a lot of the edge of the baby Hitler scene, showing Deadpool not able to go through with it. The Cable reference, though, keeps things open: the entire plot of Deadpool 2 followed Nathan Summers trying to kill a child - Russell Collins aka Firefist - and so is the right man for the job.

Like much of the Deadpool 2: The Super Duper Cut, these post-credits scenes fit the "bigger and better" adage. None of them are essential - the film worked totally fine on its own - but each makes the sequence that little more self-aware, that little more teasing, and that much more risque.
